Just so you know…Florida cancelled it all. No tax break for hurricane season or for school supply shopping. How sad that is since we are all suffering the high prices in grocery and gas. Apparently our legislature is not suffering and can still afford the $5 coffee beverages and expensive traveling and dining. I’m sure all of that is “business related”; yeah right!!!

I work in sales tax and one of my jobs is coordinating the tax holidays for my company and I find the FTA page a huge help in keeping me (mostly) sane during the back to school tax holiday season!

Since my wife’s a teacher and we have two children, we usually take big-time advantage of the Iowa tax holiday, which is perfectly timed to help her update her teacher wardrobe and get new clothes for the kids if we need any. Also, stores often stack at least some sort of sale on top of this to get people into *their* store because they know a lot of people are out and about buying clothes.

I also went looking for Maryland’s holiday since it’s usually right before school starts and thought the 2010 thing was a joke. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to find them announcing a date in a month or two – especially with the recent sales tax increase and plenty of people willing to drive to DE or PA* for back to school clothing shopping. If I was a local merchant, I’d certainly be pushing for a tax-free holiday.

*PA also has a 6% rate, but I believe most shoes and clothing are exempt.
