If you *intentionally* want to spend around $300 for an unforgettable food and dining experience in Chicago, I recommend "Moto" (www.motorestaurant.com). I went there for the first time last weekend. It's like a surreal little oasis in the middle of the meat packing district. Superb service and atmostphere. Unbelievable food and methods of preparation (e.g. liquid nitrogen, laser, etc.). Of course, it's delicious too. The first course is the menu. Yes, you eat the little menu -- and it's tasty! They have excellent wine pairings with each course. This is not something you'd do often -- that would spoil the novelty -- but definitely worth doing once! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and laughed with childish glee throughout the experience.

I agree, it couldn't have been anything and you do have to understand that you're going to pay alot once you see the atmosphere, the cuts of meat available (rack of lamb is expensive and you can get all you can eat of that there, so it can't be cheap).

I have eaten at Fogo De Chao. It's a nice restaurant, and yes it is expensive. It's an all-you-can eat type place, but with a high class atmosphere. They have several types of meat that they bring to you table and a salad buffet with some hot appetizers. They charge per person, it was $45 a piece when I got there. Plus tax, tip, drinks. The drinks are reasonably priced the wine menu lists the prices of the bottles. If I ever encounter a wine list without prices, I simply ask the waiter for a recommendation - they are usually happy to help and impress you with a great bottle.

If you are unsure of the price of something, ask. I disagree that the bill could have been 'anything'...they knew where they were going before hand, made the reservation, ate the food, and didn't think about the cost until the check came. Unlike slipping and ending up in the ER, this is one mistake they can easily avoid in the future.
