I find it really hard to have fun because i’m too worried about working to avoid having to pay off loans. Right now I work full time and go to school full time and still maintain an exceptionally high GPA. I’ve changed majors 4 times and transferred schools and will still be graduating on time. At what point does it become the financially smart decision to take out student loans?

It will still establish credit even if you don’t use it and the longer history you can show, the better.

Wow, what a lot of great tips! I’m curious: why is it a must-do for a student to get a credit card, particularly if he or she is going to cut it up and leave it at home? Will it still establish credit if you’ve never used it?

Great advice Jim — regarding jobs during school, I found working for professors invaluable to help figure out what kind of work I wanted to do at my first job and also what kind of work I wanted to avoid! Whether it’s being a teacher’s assistant for a class you do well in or doing research in a professor’s lab, it is all worthwhile and the extra $$ doesn’t hurt either. Just try to leave some time for slow pitch softball or intramural soccer and you’ll stay motivated
