One of the best things about using items like baking soda and vinegar for cleaners is that my kids can now help. They love using the scrub brush and pretending they are Cinderella, at least for now, and I am happy to let them go at it.

For toilets, I keep a spray bottle of straight vinegar nearby and spray it in once or twice a week, then scrub with the brush as usual. If there's a stain going on, I sprinkle baking soda in and then proceed. SO easy and safe - I often take care of it while the kids are in the bath, and I could never do that if I used conventional bleach-based cleaners. Great post!

Thanks for the tips! I need to try the borax and lemon. While my toilet is clean I have stains I can't seem to get rid of. Maybe this would work.

Baking soda and Vinegar work wonders. They are so inexpensive, yet can be used in just about any cleaning application throughout our homes.

The smell of vinegar is a little strong, but nowhere close to the smell of dangerous chemical cleaners.

I tried the baking soda paste thing on my stove a few weeks back. It was the biggest mess ever! I will never try that again. It took so long to clean up and it didn't even clean the stove. I had to go in with 409 to finish the job.

If you need to clean up pet "accidents" the best thing is borax and vinegar! Sprinkle the carpet with borax to absorb the smell and vacuum up then spray the area with vinegar and steam clean up. I know that there will be a vinegar smell for a few days but it goes away fast.

Couldn't you use Apple Cider Vinegar? Might smell better.

I us a small amount of water and baking soda in the coffee pot. Rubs those coffee stains right off the carafe!

Thanks for the tips.

Great tips. You can use baking soda and vinegar all over the house for nearly any cleaning needs. I like to mop the floors with strong mix of vinegar and water.

I actually like the smell of vinegar. At least, I like it more than the toxic fumes wafting out of traditional cleaning agents.

I run a vinegar and water solution through my coffee pot but instead of pouring it out, I will fill the tray under my dish drainer with it and after sitting for awhile (or until I get back to it) hard water stains scrub off easily. The mixture can be used on anything that gets hard water stains and here in New England, that is just about anything that holds water.

I used to really dislike the smell of white vinegar, but I have gotten used to it. The good thing about vinegar is that once it dries, the smell dissipates.

Great tips, the only thing is if I mention them to my wife, I will be the one testing them out. :)

We use baking soda a lot, but I’m not crazy about the vinegar. My mom used vinegar for many things from cleaning to remedies and I think I’ve developed a phobia to the smell.
