What bonus is right! It isn't so much the fact that there was no bonus, as those of us who didn't get one were told there were none being given out. I am on a fixed income, and working part time, a Xmas bonus would have made a nice Xmas for me. Now Xmas will be just another day for me.

Hey bossman, lose my phone number the next time you need someone to come in last minute.

Regarding that water heater. If it's really 20 years old, don't wait for it to quit. Just replace it now. Think of the energy savings. That alone will make the heater pay for itself pretty quickly. And you can schedule the replacement, instead of having to make a snap decision on what to purchase and having to get a plumber right away because you're completely without hot water.

I agree but I would add one more. Double check your insurance coverage. Often the most overlooked part of a financial plan is insurance.

Of course everyone knows the obvious must-haves like health or car insurance, but a much more overlooked must have insurance is renters insurance. Most people just starting out do not own homes, but that does not mean that their belongings are any less valuable. For those who can't make an extra mortgage payment (because they don't own a home) consider checking out renters insurance. (Yes, contrary to popular belief, landlords are not responsible for any of your valuables ruined in a fire, or stolen during a break-in.) Renters insurance also covers your valuables when you are traveling. Should your car get broken into, or your luggage and/or expensive equipment lost during vacation, you can recoup any losses with a renters insurance policy. Since policies are extremely easy to come by and cost about the price of a pizza per month, there's little excuse not to get one. You can search online for a policy but a pretty cool website is Liberty Mutual's www.youcovered.com , because you can get a free quote without putting in any personal information.

Whatever you do with your holiday bonus, make sure some of it goes toward your financial security!

I wasn't aware anyone gave out Christmas bonuses anymore. I don't think my wife or I have seen a Christmas bonus in over a decade.

Hmmm... If my employer gave out bonuses (hah!), I guess I'd think it was s-o-o-o incredibly "found money" that taking a vacation would be the only choice.

The only bonus I get, though, is the occasional income tax refund. It goes into savings. Having watched laid-off friends take upwards of a year to find a new job, I try to keep at least a year's worth of living expenses in a reasonably safe investment.

All your tips are great but I will be a little bit primitive and go on vacation because I am so tired of working. I choose number 7

Good advice... I would reword number 5, there is a huge difference between paying an extra payment and paying more principal... and each loan views/calculates interest differently. I would also note that these are in order of importance ;) Great blog.

Regarding Nr 3: Did you really mean 3-6 year expenses? I appreciate caution, but this might be a bit much.
