Another advantage to shopping online, at least for me, is that I am less susceptible to impulse purchases if I am not holding the thing in my hand at the time, knowing that it can be mine if I want it.

I love this list – I’ve never thought about how much more economical it really is to shop online. I’ve only preferred it because of the convenience of not having to find a parking spot or wait in lines. Now I’m glad I have a reason to stay away from the malls! Gotta agree with this! I can’t stand the malls and as a result I do all of my shopping online! I also like to be able to price match and compare before making the final purchase. Apparel may be a bit different but I am a one trick pony and I stick with what works. And so that means that I rarely purchase clothes from a company if I am unfamiliar with their sizing charts.

gus: That is true, but overall I think less gas is used overall. At a store, you use gas to drive to the store, find a place to park, and drive yourself back. The store uses gas to keep its lights on and get the product from the warehouse their store. With online purchases, the part about the store and your driving is replaced by a shipment which goes on a truck. Instead of a truck going to the store, they go to your house. Since those shipping companies make multiple deliveries on each trip, the incremental cost of gas for shipment is much smaller than shopping at a store.

You aren’t really using less gas when you consider the costs of shipping via airplane and delivery trucks. I mean, YOU are using less gas in your own tank, but you are still using up gas.

The biggest reason for me is not having to fight off the crowds. However, I still like the malls, because there is nothing like getting hands on the merchandise. There simply are things that I would rather buy in person rather than online.

For the last two years I have nearly 100% of my Christmas shopping online. With the exception of after-Thanksgiving sales, there is really no reason to hit the stores.

There is also a site called Ebates where you can get a rebate just by shopping with them. It works great! I did a lot of my Christmas shopping through them.
