American Express is running a promotion I’ve never seen before called The Gift Chain. Basically, if you spend $25 or more at a participating merchant, you’ll get a gift from that merchant’s pool of Gifts. Each merchant’s pool of gifts is slightly different (the full list is below) and once that list is exhausted, gifts will be taken from the Rollover pool.
Here’s a list of the participating stores they show at the bottom:
Nikestore, Pottery Barn, J. Crew, Neiman Marcus, Yoyo.com, Lenovo, Ruelala, GameStop, American Eagle Outfitters, REI, Toys R Us, venteprivee, Dell, Bed Bath & Beyond, Blue Nile, Zappos, Walmart
You have to be a cardmember prior to November 27th and register on The Gift Chain site to participate.
Here are a few of the more important rules:
- Limited to the first 250,000 registrants.
- You’re limited to 10 gifts per Cardmember.
- The purchase must be $25 or more, including taxes, from AE.com; BedBathandBeyond.com; BlueNile.com; Dell.com; Gamestop.com; JCrew.com; Lenovo.com; NeimanMarcus.com; Nike.com; PotteryBarn.com; REI.com; RueLaLa.com; ToysRUs.com; us.Venteprivee.com; Walmart.com; YoYo.com; Zappos.com
- 24 hours after the qualifying purchase, you’ll be sent an email on how to claim your gift.
- Promotion runs from 11/28/11 to 12/21/11, or whenever gifts run out.
No Purchase Necessary
Also, you can participate without purchasing:
Hand write your name (exactly as it appears when you registered in the Promotion), complete address, city, state, ZIP code, phone number (including area code), email address and name of the Qualifying Merchant Gift Pool in which you would like to participate (while supplies of Gifts in that Qualifying Merchant Gift Pool last) on a piece of paper and mail it in an envelope to:

Requests must be postmarked by December 21, 2011 and received by December 28, 2011. Limit one (1) request per outer-postmarked envelope. Upon receipt of your request, a Sponsor representative will “participate” for you in the specified Qualifying Merchant Gift Pool and you will be sent an email which will advise you of the Gift that you are eligible to receive and how to claim it Free Participation requests mechanically reproduced or made in any fashion other than as specified herein are void. Any requests received from a Cardmember who has not registered his/her Card by the time the Free Participation request is received will be deemed null and void. If a request does not include the name of a Qualifying Merchant but is otherwise complete, Sponsor will randomly select a Qualifying Merchant Gift Pool into which request will be entered.

SBS 2011 was better, but I guess its not a bad thing if you want to write the letter or plan to shop at the above mentioned retailers in Dec 2011.

I wouldn’t buy something just cause of this promotion though. Your chances of winning anything of value aren’t good.
Looks like about 70% of the gifts are a 1 year membership to Shoprunner which just gives you free shipping to various stores. Not bad but not exactly worth much.
About 6% of the gifts are worth $2 or so.
About 22% of the gifts are in the $5-$50 range.
A fraction of a percent are worth over $100.
(this is just rough figuring so it doesn’t add to 100%)
Yeah and also too bad you’re not guaranteed a gift every time you make a purchase. It’s random and so you better cross your fingers!
Even so, I registered. Can’t hurt to try and maybe you’ll get a stocking stuffer.
Maybe not guaranteed, but so far I’ve gotten one for all 3 of my purchases. (Though maybe the chances will go down once more people start doing it.)
What an interesting promotion. It’s a bit like getting a virtual scratch-off card after making a purchase. I won’t be participating, but best of luck to those who do. Win the big one for us!
I’ve also gotten one for each of my three purchases. I got a shoprunner membership (which I actually don’t mind, I do a fair amount of online shopping, so it may come in handy over the next year), and two $2 statement credits. Yes, I was hoping for something a little more exciting, but I was making the purchases anyways.
By the way, two of my purchases were gift cards through Walmart, which I was planning on buying for Christmas presents anyways. Shipping was free, and I got a $2 statement credit for each one. Nothing great, but a few bucks nonetheless.
Has anyone received a gift through the free participation mail in option? I sent in some request early on but I haven’t heard back yet.
