American Express Offers Return Protection

A lot of people are familiar with the various protection of credit cards, like warranty extension and fraud protection, but did you know some cards offer Return Protection? Return Protection protects against the case when a store won’t accept your return and in the event that happens, American Express will reimburse you the purchase price as long as you call them up within 90 days of the purchase and it’s an eligible purchase (there is a list of products not covered, like plants, firearms, and ammunition). The limit is $300 per item and $1000 annually. It seems like a pretty ridiculous program because it seems almost unfair to the credit card, but I suppose the number of times a vendor won’t take something back is pretty limited. The restrictions on the program are pretty typical and outlined in their Return Protection program document.

I tried to do a search and see if Citi, Capital One, Discover or any of the larger credit card issuers offered this sort of program but couldn’t find anything on them (if you are aware of their programs, please let me know). It’s a nice little benefit, a little unexpected, but definitely something worth knowing if you have a choice between cards that offer everything else the same (cash back, warranty protections, etc.)

  1. One of my closest friends has used the AmEx buyer protection with great sucess for a variety of products ranging from footwear to dishes.

My mom uses AmEx to step in when stores, vendors or hotels fail to honor promises or if the service is sub-par. AmEx has been excellent in helping my mom with disputes with stores and travel companies. It doesn’t happen often, but she’s valued their conflict resolution authority with merchants.

  2. From what I have heard and seen Amex really does the best job of taking care of the customer. Even though I didn’t know about it this kind of program doesn’t surprise me one bit.

I have also used their purchase protection program with great success. Amex will cover any purchase (some items are not covered by the program) that is lost or stolen within 90 days of purchase.

When I bough my I-phone and the price dropped $200 AFTER the period where Apple would refund me the difference, AMEX gave me a credit for $150. About 30 days later, the phone was stolen and AMEX credited me $400. I understand why Amex customers are among the most loyal in the credit card industry.

Used AmEx’s warranty extension service once for a Dell laptop repair and everything went smoothly (I think I have a draft somewhere on it). Although I don’t charge regularly on my AmEx anymore because its rewards are so-so, every big ticket item or electronic goods I purchase through a CC goes on the AmEx.

Don’t think other card issuers have similar benefit. Only thing that’s sorta close is the World MasterCard benefit “Price Protection.” You can find that from any World MasterCard from any issuer.

You can get $250 difference back per claim (if you see lower price within 60 days) and you’re limited to $1,000 per year. The claim process reads like a PITA, and it’s only for printed advertisement.

VISA Signature may have some similar price protection benefit too… but yeah, AmEx benefits kicks butt.

I have never used it myself but it is one of the reasons I have switched over to having an Amex card. After having read story after story of Amex doing great things for card holders and other companies not doing them it was a no brainer for me. I just wish I would have done it sooner.

I do also rock the Amazon visa just because I shop there a lot, and sometimes needs a non Amex card.

    I hate amex.

FYI, gold/platinum mastercard has purchase assurance included that covers damage or theft within 90 days of date of purchase; gold/platinum mastercard also has satisfaction guaranteed for gold/platinum which ; and gold/platinum mastercard has price protection too.

visa isn’t as good. visa signature gets you the damage/theft program, but not much else. gold/plat visa is limited.

that’s why i normally use my mastercard rather than visa.
