Another Stimulus Check? Perhaps.

Another Economic Stimulus Check? When Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama mentioned a second stimulus check in a speech in early June, I didn’t think that it would actually happen. Presidential nominees do a lot of talking in the months leading up to November and I chalked the idea of another stimulus check as a short term as just that - talk.

Well, turns out that the Democrats, led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, want another stimulus check. As expected, the Republicans are firing back, President Bush is asking that we “wait for the stimulus package to fully kick in,” and it’s simply business as usual in Washington.

I have mixed feelings about yet another stimulus check. On one hand, I understand that there are many families on the boundaries getting squeezed by soaring fuel and food prices. On the other, I don’t think the “stimulus package” is really stimulus at all and I don’t really think a stimulus package is the solution to our economic woes. Overall, I think it’s just political maneuvering and time that would be better spent on more important issues like education, medicare care, or climate change.

At this point, it’s merely political fodder and we shouldn’t expect another stimulus check, just that there have been discussions of one. As anyone who has watched Congress work can attest to, there are plenty of discussions in Washington that lead nowhere.

The first stimulus check was put on the table by the GOP representatives and the White House. Half of the Democratic representatives (only the people that work for Fox News use the term “Democrat”, because it sounds like “rat”) were against it because (obviously) it was a pure politics–like the Gas Tax “Holiday”, we would be borrowing money to give to people, it would cost a lot, with little or no real benefit on a small or large scale. They caved in because the American news media gave such negative press to those who opposed it. I am not aware of a second economic stimulus package, that idea would suck. However a wise man once told me “when you’re already drowning, does it really matter whether you’re under 5 ft of water or 50 ft?”

As one of millions of Americans who is drowning (metaphorically speaking), I’d happily trade being under 50 ft of water for being under 45 ft. An extra $600 won’t save anyone’s house, but it won’t hurt…

MORE FREE MONEY?!?! WOO HOO!!! :P

GAS IS OUTRAGEOUS WITH NO END IN SITE.BRING ON ANOTHER STIMULOUS CHECK.I KNOW MINE WAS SPENT TOWARDS BILLS AN GAS WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK OF RECIEVING IT.I’M A FULL TIME FIREFIGHTER AN NEEDLESS TO SAY OUR PAYCHECKS DONT GO VERY FAR.WE ALL HAVE PART TIME JOBS ON THE SIDE JUST TO GET BY RIGHT NOW.WHERE IS THE RELIEF?????

I hope us americans will receive another stimulas check. I am a single mother with two children and it’s very hard. My first check was spent in one day on rent and extra food at home. Gas, food, bills and my childrens needs are getting very expensive and its leaving me in a slump. Will it get better or will me and my children be homeless.

why dont they quit wasting money on feeding ppl on death row and actually start EXECUTING those ppl? china has a much higher population than the US does, but their homicide rate is significantly lower…do you know WHY?!? because in china, people are actually AFRAID of the consequences for murdering others….because there actually ARE consequences…like, YOU DIE! how much tax-payer money per year gets wasted on prisoners? im sorry, but i really dont think tax-payers should be supporting prisoners. they ought to be supporting themselves, just like normal people have to. did our bonehead government ever think that MAYBE some whackjobs out there only commit the crimes they did so they WOULD get caught and not have to support themselves? why dont the people in office quit worrying about stupid new laws to pass and start standing up for us about the gas prices and food prices and start making our employers give us “cost of living” raises?? oh wait….that would never happen, our governement is run by nazi republicans……

freeee monnneyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy whoooooooooooooo aaaaaaaaaaaa yahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I think they should just wipe everyones slate clean from debt and we can all start over, then we wouldnt have to worry about a stimulas check because some of us would actually have extra money to spend….. now thats what I’m talking about……………………………

Conedude 13, it’s not free money. It’s taxes that is taken out of hard working Americans pay checks. It’s our money. Don’t be fooled.

As your stereotypically stupid American, who has no idea how to balance his own checkbook - much less any idea of the implications of taking on more federal debt to pay “stimulus” checks - I fully support the government giving us more free money!

I mean, it’s not like we ever have to pay this money back, right?!? And even if we do, all I care about is TODAY! So what if this nation’s debt is causing the dollar to look more and more like “funny money” with each passing day? What do I care! As long as I get MY CHECK NOW, I’ll let other people figure out that high falutin’ economic stuff.

Signed,
A stupid, blissfully uneducated and unaware American

P.S. God Bless George Bush!

I”AM SINGLE MOTHER OF 3 BOYS AGES 8-15.I”AM SO FAR BEHIND ON MY BILLS ,THAT I”AM WORRIED THAT I”AM GOING TO LOSE EVERYTHING THAT I HAVE WORKED SO HARD FOR .THER HAS BEEN DAYS THAT I HAVEN”T EATEN SO THAT THERE WOULD BE ENOUGH FOOD FOR MY CHILDERN.SO SENT HELP KNOW……….

I agree with everybody else we need this Stimulus check because our pay checks don’t cover the bills anymore. Everything is going up but our pay’s can anybody remember the last time we had a cost of living raise? Look at the prices of things today, Chesse $7, Milk $4, Gas $4 a gallon, Bread $3 a loaf lets not even start on the price of fruit. You can’t feed a family of 4 with what you earn on one paycheck both parents have to work to make ends meet or the single parent has to hold down 2 to 3 jobs to make it. It’s time we stop worring about other countries and worry about the United States, We had a balanced buget when Bush got in now we are so far in debt that it will take years to even see the light of a even budget. Canada’s dollar is worth more than our dollar bill, now that’s a shame, thank God for Mcdonalds, Wendy’s, and Burger King at least there they have a dollar menu. It’s time to start earning those outrageous paycheck that Congress and our senators make to rebuild the United States and get us back to work and stop sending jobs out of this country, we now how to make Hats, Steel, & Toys also stop sending calls from this country to another when you need to talk to someone about your bill or the product that you just bought here. You can’t understand them have the time anyway. Verizon you have enough workers here that you have to talk to someone in India about your phone problems.. American made still stands for something, we have Americans over seas dying for a Country that is getting rich on oil and not giving back anything for our help. Sorry I got a little long winded

the gov’t should spend as much $$$$$ on their own people than Iraq.

I read what you people write, and it just shocks me how fast our country has deteriorated.. Corrupt politicians, corporations running government, unprecedented debt spending, and everyone wanting something for nothing… This certainly will not end good….

Well said, Tim…

I personally believe we need all the money we can get from congress. We put into Social Security, Welfare and money overseas to countries who don’t even care about us. We need it here and we need it sent out NOW.

Quite frankly, I’m shocked at how many of the comments here reflect a “gimme, gimme, gimme” mentality. It’s as if a disturbingly high percentage of you expect to be taken care of by the government.

By the way, there ARE plenty of good paying jobs out there. But most of those good jobs require something more than a 7th grade mastery of the written English language. Which, unfortunately, would exclude most of the posters here.

Well Steve, you don’t live in Virginia that is obivious. Not everyone stopped at the 7th grade. Times are hard. McDonald’s only pay 6.55, and even us who have degrees are having a hard time. Get a grip on downing those without and education. Or are you Mexican?

VA says, “Get a grip on downing those without ‘and’ education.”

I rest my case.

Hi there i was just asking if we all are going to get a stimulus check this year

Ok, well it seems to me the rich are always getting richer, and the middle class are getting close to being poor hitting the poverty level, and the poor are trying their hardest to make ends meet.
No more of the slinging mud at the people that do not have degrees, did it ever cross your mind that they had to go to work because they HAD to? When they wanted to go to college and filled out the FAFLSA they made to much to get any kind of grants to attend college, and they did not have the money to attend, and No one to lent them money because they didn’t have the credit score the institution wanted, so there for they were SOL wouldn’t ya say? I think the government is screwed up so many peoples lives because of this war, sending money to other countries, supporting these people that do not want to go out and work and they are able to draw food-stamps, welfare, and they need to get rid of the people in the prision system that we support all year round they need to go back to the old days where we didn’t have to support them like we do now. I think we need the extra check to help out these families in need.. if you do not need it put it in savings! I know I have a hard time paying for gas, groceries, and needful things that my family requires and it would help out.

600.00 ?? execute the prisoners ??—do Americans have any idea how our dollars are spent ? I think not by reading the above comments. Our tax dollars are funding huge military expenditures and DOE–DOD- welfare for aliens–welfare for unemployed Americans–paying other countries to NOT build a bomb—I mean we are talking trillions of dollars of made up money. America has invented another way of saying the B word (bankruptcy) —-its done by adding a new page to the assets and liabilities book—its a page called non-performing assets.
Folks–we are bankrupt. We must build out economy based on providing our world with good and services that are the best quality possible. Also we must bring integrity back into our governing bodies. Years ago my brother shared that if you ever experience a breakdown it is because somewhere in the past there was a breach in the integrity.
Essentially we need to give more than we talk from our country —there really is no other way.

my comment is mainly for steve i have completed high school now attend college work a full time job and raise 2 children alone no help from their father or my family so to say that people are not trying or have no education to me seems like you have only experienced or have only come in contact with the higher class who either have opportunities handed to them or you are just not in touch with reality anyone, ANYONE can go from making six figures today to next to nothing tomorrow so please do not judge unless you have been in another ones shoes because contrary to what you may believe everyone isnt given a fair shot at a good life now to address the check yes of course i need it and i am pretty sure alot of others do too but for those that do not maybe you should find some way to help another person who may be less fortunate than you maybe a shelter or foster home.

Mel- I don’t think anyone knows where all of our money for taxes goes! I have been paying in taxes since 1986 when i was able to work out in the workforce.. I lived on a farm and seen how hard my family worked just to keep things going. Yeah the prison system is a mess and they have more comforts of home than most U.S citizens. I don’t think I said execute them?? that is how closed minded some people are with this whole issue! like i said the RICH keep gettin RICHER! there is oil in the US but no one wants to drill it.. but thats typical!

Nicole, a few comments: First, I am curious to know how you’re doing in college, given that your written English skills appear to be on par with those of a typical 5th grader. And I’m not trying to be insulting. But your written English skills are quite literally THAT bad, and wholly unacceptable for the type of employment I imagine you are ultimately seeking. And yet, time and time again I see people like you complain that you can’t find good work, that the system is rigged against you, yada, yada, yada. But you never seem to acknowledge that maybe “the system” isn’t the problem. Maybe your lack of marketable job skills (like not possessing even a basic proficiency in written English) are the bigger problem for you?

Second, I’m not sure why you think I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth. While growing up, my family was not rich. I had to serve in the military for four years in order to be able to pay for college. And even then, I had to take out significant loans to afford tuition. And I also had to work though college, as nobody else was putting food on my table, either. But what I NEVER did was make excuses, or sit there thinking, “Poor, poor me! Life is just SO unfair”. And yet, too many of my fellow Americans are all too willing to blame anyone and everyone else for their own lack of economic success.

Essentially, you’re right about one thing Nicole. Life is NOT fair. Some people do, in fact, have it easier than others. But there are also countless tales of people who had nothing, worked hard, and ultimately became successful. And while luck sometimes plays a role, the much bigger factor is that these people were willing to work as hard as necessary and sacrifice to reach their goals. What they most certainly DIDN’T do was sit around and complain that life is unfair, the odds are stacked against them, and all the other things I’ve seen so much of in this thread.

And in that regard, I feel sorry for people like you Nicole. There is much opportunity for economic success in America, but you have to have a “success mentality” in order to tap into those opportunities. And I can tell that you don’t have that mentality. Instead, you are acting like the typical American who instead prefers to blame their troubles on external factors. (It’s much easier and feels better to blame others, than to acknowledge that maybe we have made some bad choices in life that got us to where we’re at.) And as long as you continue to blame others (all while waiting for that next government check to show up in your mailbox) you will continue to be denied the American dream. But remember, the choice is always yours. Always.

What a DICK steve is… kicking someone while they are down?!?!?. Ya know no one will blow your damn horn. Back in the “day” when you were working hard and attempting to make it though school, It was allot easier rates were down and gas was prolly .97 cents a gallon. PLEASE dont go there old man… I will always support someone that is willing to go back to school and raise their children. You go Nicole and make this dang old man eat his words! I think that we pay to much in taxes and we deserve something back! i have never drawn any kind of goverment check in my life and have a great job! But it still not enough trying to raise a family.. Jobs are being cut everyday companies shutting down and people wondering what they will do next! Its people like you that make this the way it is.. they are dicks and never will change! I would say a few other things to you, but I wont go there.

Kerry, thanks for validating my point that most Americans are far too eager to blame their lot in life on someone or something else. Here, you have generically blamed “people like you” for the fact that you can’t properly take care of your family. As if I am somehow standing in the way of you gettng a better job or otherwise improving your economic outlook.

And true to form, you also demand a government handout because you “deserve something back”. Oh, really? You mean to tell us that this country has given you freedom and opportunity that is limited only by your imagination, but that isn’t enough?!? You still “deserve something back”?!? Wow. No wonder the country is going to hell in a handbasket. There are too many ungrateful people like you in it, always looking for that next handout that you hilariously think you “deserve”.

P.S. Maybe you can enroll in an English class with Nicole. If you’re nice, I’d bet they’ll teach you the difference between “to” and “too”. Heck, if you’re lucky, they may even teach you that “allot” is not a word!

(When did America become overrun by uneducated boobs?)

By the way—remember— this country was and is an ill gotten gain.
It was essentially stolen from the American Indian—Google to Taino Massacre and know that this was just the beginning of a holocaust that towers over what the Germans did. Even more the Spanish, after wiping out the Indian population through torture and slavery, brought black folks from Africa to do the slavery.
Yes—it was Spain that sold black slaves to the white man in the south and populated the West Indies with the sturdy and hard working African folks…..
You wouldn’t suppose that the US would have some Karma in the matter—how about getting that the US government still holds enormous tracts of Indian land that they will never give back—at least not for now.
Interestingly–the only real minorities ARE the blacks and Indians—maybe its time for some repentance and some restitution. Lets see—what is the condition of the black population here in the US……hmmmm
600.00 bucks isn’t the issue at all……if there is an issue its about honesty and integrity.
We got work to do baby or forget it–we are going to be a separated society like Mexico—barbed wire and glass shards to keep those poor Indio’s Mestizo’s out .You know the one’s coming to the US to have a better life that sell chicklets in the markets of Mexico. Poor Indians—–wow.Maybe its their turn to have some prosperity and wealth.

LOL steve no your the boob! glad to ruffle your feathers a little.. Your probaly one of the company presidents that have moved their work overseas so you can pay as little as you want for production! and you could careless about the hardworking american people as long as your pockets are padded.

Hey Kerry…the correct spelling is “you’re”. You know, since you missed that not once, but twice.

You seemed to have difficulty spelling some other words correctly, too. Which makes you look kinda like an uneducated boob. Sorta like I previously said.

Where do you people come from? And why are you ruining my America with your inability to communicate in English?

I agree with the 2nd stimulus check. My husband lost his job and has tried to apply every where but every company he has applied at tells him they are no longer excepting applications. He now does temporary jobs for neighbors and I small companies that’s not an everyday job. I’m lucky if he works 3 days a week. I have 3 kids and I can’t pay the bills on my own. We have no credit card bills. All we have is morgage, utilities, 1 car payment, insurance and this is just the everyday/everyone kind of bills. I still can’t afford it. 2 of my kids went back to school on Monday and they don’t have any new clothes, shoes and some of their school supplies are used ones from last year. I need this check. I’m about to commit suicide just so my husband can get the life insurance to pay off the house.

And why are you trying to teach english on a blog? lmao! thanks for making me laugh today!

@concernedmother - I hope you’re not serious about suicide. It’s not something to joke about and life insurance won’t pay under that circumstance anyway.

Before suicide—give your life to serving others—the payback is happiness.
Try it
There is a Hindu group that practices not having expectations—they live wonderful and free lives—let whatever comes –come–just watch it–endless changing scenes…… take your head to the ground and touch the earth with it—find time to laugh at your addiction to drama
It will be over soon enough–enjoy the wonder of being here
Hell –spend your 600.00 tax rebate on some fun–whatta hay

I am not serious about suicide… I understand insurance won’t pay for that reason of death. At times I get so stressed I want to fake an accidental death like getting hit by a car or something but that’s not always the answer. I wouldn’t give anything up to watch my kids live their lives anyways. This will all pass eventually and hopefully soon. That 2nd check would help a little. I wouldn’t know what to do with it first though. Pay bills (even though I’d still be behind), buy the kids new school clothes or simply make up for the boring summer I had put the kids through. (My oldest who felt bad and helped his father work for the neighbors)
I do want to thank those of you who do try to see the positive side of life (Melito and Jon) I always told myself, “No matter how bad things are, it can always get worst”. And I am extremely happy for all I have. I guess I should start saying, “no matter how bad things are, it’ll all be better in the end”.

Thank you!!!

I wouldn’t dare take my own life from my kids… I can’t leave them like this! At one point I did want to walk in front of a speeding car to make it look like an accident but I know it’s not the answer. I used to say, “As bad as things are, they can always get worst”. I hope this is the worst it gets. It’s because of positive people like you guys (Jon and Melito) who look on the bright side of life that helps people like me get thru when we’ve forgotten all we have. This 2nd check would help whether if it’s to buy my kids new school clothes, pay for bills (even though I’d still be behind) or to make up for the horrible summer I put my kids thru. (My oldest who is 9 yrs and voluntarily helped his father with working on neighbors yards, installments, repairs, ect. ~ for extra cash) At this point, I don’t care what people say. I need this money and I need it now. Some of the comments above have been pretty harsh to those in need of this check. Be harsh to me and say what you need to say. I know there are other people who go thru worst times then myself and there are a lot more people suffering out there but if the government can help a little more by giving this check, I know a lot of us would be greatly appreciated.

concernedmother, try reading the book “Financial Peace” by Dave Ramesy… he is a very conservative financial advisor who lays out step by step the process of getting ones finances under control.

http://www.daveramsey.com/

Steve you remind me of an idoit boss I used to work for. His name Is Nik Larum. Red hair a real but wipe. Thought he knew it all because he had a degree. His business folded. He folded someone else’s business and now he is folding the trash company. Go to H— Steve

It wouldn’t hurt to find the glue that holds all of us together. We are, by nature interbeings. We are defined by each other and we live in one of the most beautiful and leading countries in the world—in fact the US includes ALL other countries–the US is us. We are the government–many of us are not diligent about the management of our society and ignore the value in getting and giving the best education possible for ALL of our citizens.
I am a stand for isolating our politicians from the controlling big business interests in this country and putting the average Americans interests first. This means to change the criteria for how we respond to lobbyists and that there be a demand that out politicians be of impeccable integrity. (we ALL have to work much harder)
Theres a train going down the track–its going to a bad place. Getting on one side of the train OR the other (democrats and republicans) will not change the direction of the train…..Someone will have to have the guts to stop the train and tear up the track and rebuild it to go to a better place–a place that is in fact our birthright.

I agree with alot of the postings. It is very hard to live with the prices going up and not the pay checks. I have been on my job for 6 years and always has been able to budget my money OK to make it to the next check and pretty comfortable with a little to put aside for a rain day but now I am behind on my credit card bills, cut off my cell phone under contract, now owing $250 cancelation fee plus the bill and buy whatever groceries I can between checks to feed my 2 children. So my credit cards are all maxed out and I am unable to keep them up either. I can’t afford to get a second job because child care is expensive also. So what are we suppose to do when each year all we have to look forward to is a 25 cent raise, and no cost of living. I live in Iowa alone, my family can’t afford to take me and my children in too, they are stuggling too. So another check would be nice, to help me catch up on my light bill I bypassed for groceries. I have 2 growing boys.

Single Mom Also!

Steve you idoit. You’re is for you are. Kerry didn’t need correcting in the above e-mail. (your pockets are padded) Kerry this is correct english. Not only did I take english, but spanish and german as well. Grow up Steve. You BUTT WIPE.

Hold on to your hats folks because we are going to experience some very rapid and distinct changes. I think things are going to get pretty bad and then get better.
We are at war with Islam and its an economic war. I believe they will cause a real crash by cutting off oil—but the world will align and pull things together rapidly.
If i had relatives in Iran i would help them get out of there ASAP. I believe the bombing will be precise, but the radiation from their processes may be poisonous.

Refund checks are a joke in my opinion–for now do the best you can and pay for necessities first then luxuries if there is excess. Pay what you can and don’t worry about your credit. If your really strapped let the banks have your gas guzzlers and pay what you can on your mortgage.
All you can do is your best so do that and maintain your calm center.
