So it looks like you only have to make one direct deposit within 60 days to get the bonus. Could be easy money if you can just make a transfer from another bank account that you already have.

We have a Bank of the West in our town and while I’m sure customer service varies from location to location, the staff here has been very friendly, courteous and helpful. I’ve never heard a complaint about their service.

I tried opening an account there about a year ago; submitted an application online and faxed a signature card, then got an email saying they couldn’t open it, and “please visit one of our branches to open your account”. I called and they didn’t have any info on what the problem is. I didn’t bother going into a branch to try opening it again.

Its a bank I have never heard of in Ohio, but that probably won’t stop some people. My brother has a bank of some no name town in Mississippi that pays a crazy 3 or 4% on his checking account. Sometimes the small banks make crazy offers to attract business. But just because they are small or you haven’t heard of them doesn’t mean they are not for real.

  5. I’ve heard good things about Bank of the West. If you have a direct deposit option than it’s a good idea and it seems like free money (if you don’t mind opening and managing another account). It’s not for everybody, but for some it looks like a good way to get $100. No bank would give you $100 just like that, and therefore screen ppl by having them complete one of two tasks. These tasks signal that these ppl are interested in discounts and free things and are willing to go through the hoops required to get them, and it signals that they will have some significant financial interaction with the bank (ie. they won’t just open the account and let it sit there). I responded to last year’s promotion of this bank and received an ipod touch! It was a great experience – they delivered what they promised!
