BB&T $125 Checking Account Promotional Bonus

BB&TIt’s been a while since I wrote about a nice bank deal but if you’re in the market for a brick and mortar bank, BB&T is offering a $125 checking account bonus for new account holders if you meet their criteria by May 31st, 2013. I tend not to write as often about similarly incentivized credit card offers because credit card applications have a negative impact on your credit score. Bank offers, however, don’t impact your credit score at all. However, since most require direct deposits, you might draw the ire of your favorite person in human resources. 🙂

To qualify, you need to open a checking account between now and May 31st, 2013 and:

  • Use their online bill payment service to initiate 3 payments (minimum $25) from your checking account within 90 days, or,
  • Enroll and receive 2 direct deposits (minimum $100) within 90 days of account opening.

According to a service representative I talked to, there is one geographic requirement (Erica). You need to live within the BB&T “service area” which includes the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington D.C.

Official Terms & Conditions:

Eligibility: This special limited time offer is available for personal checking accounts only that are opened between 1/01/2013 and 5/31/2013. Offer is subject to change or be withdrawn at any time without notice and cannot be combined with any other offer. Offer is limited to one incentive per household, and does not apply to second or multiple personal accounts. In order to receive the $125 incentive, clients must open a checking account and do at least one of the following. 1) Use BB&T online bill payment service to initiate 3 online bill payments (minimum payment of $25) from your new checking account within 90 days of account opening; OR 2) Enroll in and receive 2 direct deposits (minimum of $100 each) to the new personal checking account within 90 days of account opening. Any account not in good standing, closed, and/or with a balance less than or equal to zero at the time we review account eligibility (between 90-120 days of account opening) will not receive the $125 incentive. Normal minimum balance requirements apply. Some BB&T checking account options accrue interest. For example, an Elite Gold account earns 0.01% Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for balances $0 – $2,499, 0.01% APY on balances of $2500 – $24,999 and 0.01% APY on all balances $25,000 – $99,999,999,999 in North Carolina; rates good as of 11/5/2012 and are subject to change. The $125 incentive will be deposited directly to your account within 120 days of account opening if qualifiers above are met; and will be reported to the IRS as required by law.

When I did a BB&T offer last year, I got incoming transfers from outside banks to count as direct deposit to avoid maintenance fees and qualify for the promotion. I would assume the same would apply this year.

Thanks for the reply, Jim. It is, as I suspected, free with direct deposit set up or more deposits put there than I want to do. 53rd is going same route..must decide by 2/12/13 to have direct deposit, or substantial $$$ deposited there. Have had that acct for 8-10 years. Again, thanks.

Lot’s of additional requirements if you want to avoid a $10/month fee:

          Monthly Maintenance Fee

Avoid the monthly maintenance fee by meeting any one of the following:

One ACH direct deposit of $100 or greater per statement cycle OR

$1,500 average checking balance per statement cycle OR

$6,000 combined in deposit and retail outstanding loan balances to include checking, savings, Money Rate Savings, Investor?s Deposit Accounts, retail loans, lines of credit, and credit card balances (excludes CDs, IRAs, and Preferred Lines)** OR

Any outstanding personal mortgage loan balance**

Opening bank accounts can affect one’s credit. Many times opening checking accounts requires a hard credit pull by the bank.
