Big Box Retailer Return Policies

Wal-MartOne of the more popular posts on this site is Costco’s incredible return policy where you can basically return anything non-electronic whenever you want. It can be open and you may have lost the receipt, but they’ll take it back. It’s one of the most liberal policies and one of the reasons why we shop there (in addition to the great prices) – why worry about returns when you know you can return anything. Even the recent change, of limiting electronics to six months, didn’t dissuade us. Six months is forever!

That made us wonder – how does that compare to other retailers? A lot of folks shot at the likes of Wal-Mart, also for their low prices, so how do other big box retailers compare? Their policies weren’t as good and their list of exceptions can often be a mile long.

Check out the nifty table Brandon put together comparing Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target. There’s 3 tabs that show more detail of each retailer’s policy.

  1. That’s a handy little widget! We love the Costco return policy. I had to return a laptop there last year that had gotten some nasty virus a couple of weeks after I bought it and was completely unusable. They took it back no questions asked.

I attempted to return a playstation Game to Walmart one day after getting the wrong one for my daughter (she already had that version).
I was given the “third degree” and embarassed in from of those behind me in line. I did nto even open the packing; returned it the next day. They eventually allowed me to return it and get a credit on my card. Several months later I had the exact same issue when I attempted to purchase a Christmas present (granddaughter already had that one). I humbly went back to Walmart and was in and out with a refund (no questions asked) in less that 4 minutes.

I like Wal Mart’s return policy. I am awful about saving receipts so the ability to return without receipts is important to me. Very rarely get a hassle.
