Black Ice & Winter’s First Swing

Posted By Jim On 12/10/2005 @ 3:21 pm In Cars | 5 Comments

Last year, I bought my Toyota Celica from a guy on Ebay [3] who lived in Florida and that car, naturally, had performance tires that performed very poorly in the snow. I slipped and slid my way home the first light dusting we had in Maryland and bought new tires the next day, all season. Well, I made it out of that winter without a single incident and Mother Nature was angry she didn’t get me. Well, she got me last night…

I was practically home, driving up the street that I turn off to enter the cul-de-sac where my home is, when my car must have hit a patch of black ice and slid into the curb. The horn went off, there was the bang of my rim hitting the curb, and I screwed up the alignment of my front passenger-side wheel. The turning was sluggish but I made it the rest of the way back (probably 500 feet, so you can imagine my annoyance and anger). The alignment is definitely messed up but hopefully that’s it.

I’ll probably be writing some bits the next few days on car repair shops and how not to get ripped off because that’s what I’ve been reading lately. While this is my second car, this is the only car of mine that I’ve done any damage to (my last car was totaled by a woman in a Dodge Durango) so I don’t have much experience in the way of car repair. Any tips would be appreciated…
