Credit Bureaus Need More Oversight

I read about a credit bureau practice first at Caroline Mayer’s blog, The Checkout, where various mortgage companies have started to pay a bureau to notify them whenever someone applies for a loan. On one hand, it’s nice to get more competitive offers but on the other you’re bound to get predatory and illegal offers as well.

This makes me wonder if there should be higher restrictions on who can get access to all that sensitive information in your credit report. Right now it seems as though anyone can get their hands on your information. Do you think that we need more oversight (federal? state?) given the recent increased frequency of identity theft?
