Discover Card’s Get More Program

Very very clever Discover Card. I used Discover all throughout college when I used to buy stuff for resale on eBay because they had that double cashback program where you’d get 2% on regular purchases (you actually receive 1% but could double it on some vendors, such as Staples). When the doubling stopped, so did my usage in the card. So now, fast forward about three years and Discover Card is back on the scene with a Get More program that offers 5% cashback on items on a rotating basis. I think this is very clever because it will cause you to put a Discover Card in your wallet in the event you do spend on one of the special categories.

If you look at the categories, they appear to follow what’s “hot” in a particular season. Right now, Q2, the hot topic is gasoline and car care because of the summer traveling season. For Q3, which you’ll see after the jump, it’s very much back to school items like tuition, clothes, and school supplies. What can we expect in Q4? Maybe winter sports apparel, vacations, and other travel goodies.

Also, if you need a card… I recommend the 5% cashback Discover Gas card because you might as well have the base benefits be 5% cashback on gasoline with the other categories as icing on the cake.

Get a full 5% Cashback Bonus on Get More purchases in popular categories that change four times a year. It’s a free benefit for being a Cardmember and you’ll continue to receive up to 1% Cashback Bonus on all your other purchases. Here’s how you can get 5% Cashback Bonus right now: (view site)

For Q3 of 2006 (July 1 through September 30, 2006) you’ll get 5% cashback bonus on:
Tuition - Classes from preschool to college

Apparel - Gap, Kohl’s, Marshalls, T.J.Maxx & Famous Footwear
Office/Home - Dell, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, Linens ‘n Things & Pier 1 Imports.

As for the last 17 days of Q2, until June 30th 2006, you get 5% cashback bonus on:
Gas, Car Washes, AutoZone, Firestone Complete Auto Care, Midas, Pep Boys & Sears Auto.

Their program is perhaps too clever.

By making it complicated to use, it’s likely that I’ll choose not to use it at all. If I have to remember to check what the rebate is on, and then still have to worry that the retailer won’t even take Discover, it’s just not worth the effort.

Yes and No. For gas, it’s easy and I’ve been buying all of my gas with my Discover card after not having used it for 6-12 months (and I’ll stop using it for gas on 7/1). When you get into these promotions that are tied to certain stores or brands, then I’d agree; it’s too much hassle to keep track of.
