Discover Get More Reward Categories (2011)

The Discover More card is one of the few credit cards that rotates its reward categories. Normally, a rewards credit card is set in its ways when it comes to reward categories. The Discover More card, through it’s Get More program, rotates the bonus category every quarter to something that seems seasonally appropriate. For January through March, you get a bonus on travel and restaurants since lots of people travel (probable to get out of the cold!).

Well, fortunately for us, Discover is also pretty friendly about broadcasting the schedule. Here is the Get More 5% Cashback bonus calendar for 2011:

  • January-March: Travel & restaurants – airlines, hotels, restaurants, car rentals, cruises; signup now.
  • March only: Grocery & drug stores; you can signup now.
  • April-June: Home & fashion – Home improvement stores, department stores, clothing stores; signup is March 1.
  • July-September: Gas & hotels – gas stations, hotels, movies, theme parks; signup is June 1.
  • October-December: Restaurants & fashion – restaurants, department stores, clothing stores; signup is September 1.

If you don’t have a Discover card and want to get in on the bonus action, this offer is probably your best option. You can get a $100 cashback bonus if you make $500 in purchases within 3 months plus there’s a 0% balance transfer offer (if that’s something you’re in the market for).

  • Get $100 Cashback Bonus when you make $500 in purchases within 3 months
  • 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 12 months, then the Regular APR
  • 0% intro APR on purchases for 6 months, then the Regular APR
  • 5% Cashback Bonus® in categories that change like travel, gas, groceries, restaurants, home improvement stores and more
  • Up to 1% unlimited Cashback Bonus on all other purchases
  • No Annual Fee

i am torn. while i like the idea of rotating categories,i have to say i think i like cards that have a specific reward set in place more. i would rather have a card with, say, a high reward for gas or groceries and a decent all-around reward system, than having to keep track of the rotating reward each time period.

I’ll go on record saying I HATE rotating categories. It probably stems from my Chase Freedom Plus card that let you get bonus rewards on your top 6 categories each month. I was free to spend however I wanted and they would reward me for it. Now I had crappy categories with capped rewards.

  3. The $100 bonus is off the table, but they have extended their 0% intro APR on balance transfers AND new purchases to 15 months! Plus they lowered the balance transfer fee to just 4% rather than 5…
