Most of the men I know have spent considerable amounts of money on depreciating assets like electronic gadgets.

I'm guessing that there must be some influence from the fact that on average women have lower salaries and are more likely to take career breaks. The biggest problem is that the effects of lower investment are made worse because women live longer than men on average - they are far more likely to end up in poverty in old age.

Of course its hard to generalize, I just know that the women I have encountered have generally undersaved for retirement, instead preferring to allocate their money on depreciating or marginally appreciating assets like cars and primary residences, or on items which wouldn't qualify as assets.

My wife, when I married her, had $20K in her 401K (she was 39), yet probably owned more than 50 pairs of shoes.

I think men and women act well as a team, tending to balance out eachother's shortcomings. I think a lot of men (myself included) don't realize that life is no fun if you don't enjoy it, and if you obsess over not spending money you won't enjoy your life.
