5 Tips for Using Mobile Coupons

mobile couponCoupon clipping has long been hailed as the cornerstone of frugal living. While I’m not a big fan of coupons, I know that many people use them to save money. And, with the right strategies, the savings from using coupons can really add up over time.

Some of those coupon clipping strategies are time consuming, though. That’s why some people are embracing mobile coupons. No more clipping. And no more unwieldy coupon file. However, mobile coupons aren’t always the more convenient money savers.

Different retailers use different systems to deliver their mobile offerings, and sometimes your coupons aren’t organized in a very friendly manner on your mobile device. Here are 5 things to consider while using mobile coupons:

1. Be Aware of the Wi-Fi

What sort of data plan do you have? How fast is your Wi-Fi? How fast is the store’s connection? This can affect how quickly your coupon is pulled up on your mobile device. There are few things as embarrassing as waiting for your device to load your coupon while you wait in line. And if you have several coupons — and no app that automatically pulls them all up and applies them — this process can take even longer.

2. Use an App that Can Apply Multiple Coupons at Once

There are some mobile coupon apps that allow you to store multiple coupons. These coupons are tied to your account. As your phone is scanned, all of the eligible coupons are activated. This can save time at the grocery store, and reduce the need for you to try to remember all of your coupons.

3. Watch Out for Glitches

You do have to pay attention, though. If a coupon is missed, or if something goes awry, not all of your savings will be recorded. Pay attention so that you do not end up with wasted coupons. This is true whether you are using an app that stores multiple coupons, or whether you have an app that stores loyalty and discount program information.

4. Sign Up for Geo-Based Offers

There are coupon apps that provide you with geo-based offers. You do have to be comfortable with the idea of stores interfacing with the GPS on your mobile device. With these apps, your proximity to a store triggers an offer. So you can receive a coupon when you are in the vicinity of a retailer. Your attention is brought to the coupon, and you can go in and use it if you want.

Others give you coupons only after you check in using your app. So, if you check in at a restaurant, you might receive a coupon for a free appetizer or some other deal.

5. Diversify Your Mobile Coupon Apps

Use various programs and apps to get your mobile coupons. Pay attention to the delivery system used by various stores. You can use something like Apple’s Passbook, but it is also possible to sign up for texted coupons from many retailers. Others will email you coupons, and let you bring them up on the browser of your mobile device. Sign up for a variety of delivery methods, and you will be able to use more offers.
