I have a feeling I'm about to experience the same thing - I'm moving to the UK, where items are more expensive and so is space. So, I'm purging a lot of items (trying to move with just my suitcases), and I'm going to have to think hard about what I really need to buy once I get there.

Strangely, living in Manhattan makes you very conscious of the items you buy. This is because of the high cost of those items and because of the lack of storage space. I therefore tend to really agonize over purchases that I previously would have made on impulse. Also, the lack of a Sam's or BJ's Price Club here helps immensely.

"Throw out your television!"

I love that quote!

Lately I've encountered people who have spent a lifetime not asking themselves "Why am I buying this?" before a purchase. Consequently, their house is full of crap they don't need. If an item doesn't fulfill a purpose like food to eat, makes me happy, etc, then don't purchase it. I allow for frivolous items but you can't buy too many things under a retail therapy plan. Being conscious of how often you're buying happy-making items is the key.
