Thank you for giving me the idea and the guide to create my financial map. I completed a map and am using it as a living document and a great visual overview of my family financial picture.

My map is quite a bit more robust than most of the others I have saw around the web, so go ahead and add a link to it on your page if you'd like.

Thanks Jim

I published my financial system map a while back old financial map and it caused me to make some changes to get to our new financial map.

Here were the financial system guidelines that I used to transform our map.

Also, I used Bubbl.us which has a nice wordpress widget to share the maps.

Sorry for all the links but I think they are all very relevant to the great discussion here.

Tommy - good idea, but many people won't have access to Visio.

I would suggest that a Google Docs Presentation would be suitable and would enable the map to be safely stored online.

Thanks Jim - very useful.

I used Visio to create my map a while back. The main reason was to keep everything straight in my own mind and help explain the "insanity" (in her mind) of having several banks to my wife.

Visio is nice so that you can change things around without having to redraw everything.

Also to answer someone's question about passwords: passpack.com - I was hesitant at first so just trial ballooned it with some fake accounts, but they've been rock solid. They also have an offline client that you can sync to your online account (or you can just use the offline client without an online account I think).

Spain- I think you're missing the point of this post. There is nothing in the above map to suggest that credit cards aren't being paid in full every month.

Every month, my cable bill, mobile phone bill, and parking garage bill get automatically charged to my primary credit card. And every month I pay that card in full. But whether or not I pay doesn't change the map.

Not to hassle,

But in i think I have it easier:

- no credit card postponed payments (means i always pay my credit card every month, no interest).
- all my bills in my ING account (phone, dsl, gas, electricity, etc)
- all my income in the same ing ACCOUNT (salaries mainly)
- for savings i use ING deposits or other banks that give fixed interest rates.

Simple and easy.

If can´t pay for it i won´t buy it, pretty simple. I have read tons of US blogs about this, and form my perspective it´s the ability to use credit cards as loans which is killing you guys.

Cheers.

Very cool. I have been trying to figure out if I can simplify my own accounting and a visual map is much better than my bullet list.
Thanks for sharing!

That's brilliant. I think I'll make one for my husband so he has a better idea of how our money is handled. I may also help my mom make one so she can keep track of her growing number of accounts.

Thanks!

This is a great idea, I am working on mine right now. This reminds me of the whole idea of assets and liabilities, and tracking where your money goes in and out.

Thanks for the idea!

I love it! I've been trying to help my wife understand all our accounts and how they are interlinked, but I never thought to just map it out. Very clever.

Always have a dormant or "reserve" or backup checking account available incase your primary one gets "blown up" by a security breach, card theft, check theft, etc. With a backup account you can quickly switch over your billing or deposit info over without having to physically get to the bank to create a new account. Then follow up with the problem on the initial account, get it solved and then create a new account to lie dormant.
