I think the worst mechanics are the chain stores like Precision Tune, just brakes, etc. they charge nearly the same as dealers, and have crappy mechanics. This is what happens when you go to places that work on all types of cars, rather than your specific model.

The latter part of #4 should be emphasized. You should look for a mechanic that specializes in the car that you want repaired. I took my 1984 bmw to a small mechanic who the previous owner had used. Although he was a volvo specific mechanic, he worked on my bimmer enough that I trusted him with the work. Moreover, he let me learn how to fix stuff to save money while he provided input (sweat equity). He and many other mechanics had started their individual shops in storage spaces. Each specialized in different cars. You might check out craig's list, if it is available in your area, where alot of these kinds of mechanics list.

Aside from what everyone else stated, I also look for cleanliness. There is alot to be said for a mechanic who keeps things organized and keeps things clean. If they are that anal, they are more than likely going to handle your mechanical work the same way.

Now with all that said, you should always get guarantees in writing for work done.

Other places you can look is your local community college, mechanic school, or prison.

I agree with Jerry, make sure you ask questions. If you're clueless about what cars, take notes. It's best to run it by friends or family that are car savvy. Even if you have no one to ask, the mechanics won't know.

Ask questions. I know not everyone can do their own work, but ask questions. If anything sounds fishy, or they refuse to answer any questions, move on to someone else
