Free 1-Year Identity Guard for Upromise Members

If you’re a member of Upromise (it’s free to sign up), you get a free 1 year Good Start level membership to Identity Guard (details). Good Start is the first level of credit monitoring and it includes monitoring of your Equifax report, email alerts of any changes, and toll-free customer support. It’s not really all that great but it is free (you can get a six month trial by going to the site normally, so Upromise members get an additional six months). You have to cancel after the year or they automatically bill you. By comparison, their Level 4 Total Protection offers significantly more services (including the monitoring of illegal posting and trading of your credit card numbers because they monitor the black market, something I thought was pretty cool) but also costs $159/year.

Even though this particular perk isn’t that great, I think Upromise is a great “set it and forget it” service. I attached my grocery store’s loyalty card, some of my credit cards, and occasionally get free money for buying stuff I didn’t know I’d get free money for (thus it’s truly free!). I don’t look at the balance often but I’ve got a few dollars stored away in there.

How do you monitor the black market? Don’t you think if that was possible the FBI or state police would be doing the same thing?

The FBI does monitor the black market but I don’t know how they check for your credit card number specifically unless they buy the lists from the thieves.

For more on this black market, there was a good NY Times article I discussed a while back.

Actually, according to their Good Start account policy, you do not get charged after one year of free service. The account will be automatically canceled. Also, Identity Guard for UPromise members does not require any credit card info. Once you become a free trial member, you can upgrade to any level of service in the member area where you will be asked for billing info.

I still don’t buy “watching the blackmarket.” I knew this guy that would take someones credit card at the store they worked at and scan them in the machine he bought. After you swipe the card you can read what it tells you. It is not a hard code, you can get it free. Then he would print out the magnetic strip and put them on playing cards. He mostly bought gas and things on the internet with them. He didn’t go online and leave his ip address all over the place. What got him in was the video cameras at the gas station and the dozens of fake credit cards in his house.

Although organized crime and lone criminals play a big role, you are more likely to get your your identity stolen by your friends or family members. They already know your SSN, mailing addres, etc and can easily get a card in your name.

“you are more likely to get your your identity stolen by your friends or family members” – that is so true, but for some people they want the peace of mind that they are safe from the big time criminals because that kind of theft is more “believable” to someone. It’s more likely that a friend or relative, all things being equal, would steal $20 from my wallet than for me to be held up by a criminal in the street… but I still like police patrols around just the same.
