As Jim mentioned, the IRS offers free filing: http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html. I did it and it is pretty easy.

TurboTax is what I use. They let you use it for free if you’re in the military. It’s a really great system imo.

I have used TaxAct for the past two years to file my federal taxes and then Illinois has a free state option. By combining these two filing options I haven’t paid to efile yet, but my taxes haven’t been very complex yet. I imagine it will start getting more complicated with my mortgage and itemizing deductions.

I’ve used TaxAct for about 5 years, and never had a problem. Recently, I’ve had K-1 forms, and it’s not super clear where all the numbers on the form go in the software, so I hired a CPA, but if you have W-2’s and 1099’s, it does what it says.

I realized what was going on, if you go to TaxCut.com then you won’t find the free option. If you go to HRBlock.com, then you can see the free option available on the homepage. That seems like an odd way to set it up.

I just submitted my return for the second year using H&R block online for free. I also did not have to pay even though my AGI was over the $56,000 limit that other sites have. Not sure where you looked but it worked for me. I also ran my numbers with turbotax and taxact and got basically the same numbers at them all.
