I just had this conversation with a friend of mine looking for a job. Most companies don't advertise. They post internally or rely on an employee referral program. Either way, your personal networking or friend factor is critical. A step in the door is vital to getting to that first interview. It also gives you an immediate reference when referred by an internal source. Applying online or sending your resume through the web falls into a dark hole and is difficult to follow up on. Who do you call ? At least when someone refers you, it enables a method to continue the dialogue and communicate with a person on the inside.
