Happy Columbus Day

Wondering why banks are closed today? It’s Columbus Day. We’re celebrating the day that Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas back in 1492, when he, of course, sailed the ocean blue. With the passing of Columbus Day, we are further reminded that we now only have three remaining holidays on the year (Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas) before we start 2013 and everyone freaks out because we’re going over the fiscal cliff.

Interesting part is that despite being a federal holiday, most people don’t get the day off. I know that when I was working, I never had Columbus Day off… seemed kind of unfair. 🙂

We’ll be back tomorrow with your regularly scheduled programming.

  1. Days like this remind me that I’m not working in Europe. You know, they with the 5 weeks’ paid annual vacation and 39 public holidays. Oh, wait: Europe is still in recession and several of their countries are on the brink of defaulting.

I’m an immigrant, which allows me to say Americans are some of the hardest working people in the world. It’s no coincidence that we’re still the economic superpower. I’m not aware of official statistics, but I think no country has as many people working second (or third) jobs as Americans. And no country has as few vacation days and paid holidays per year.

Is America perfect? Not at all. But which country is better?

As a second generation Italian American I always take a vacation day on Columbus Day, while I do work over the weekend to keep work commitments. I want to always celebrate that the damn Vikings beat us here. I always drink a cup of mead, followed by a gallon on vino da tavala.

Since 1990 us hicks out here in South Dakota have celebrated today as Native American Day (who’s columbus?!?) Since they are the ones who “discovered” America first 😉

  4. I definitely don’t get today off but I do get two days for Thanksgiving and Christmas so I don’t mind not getting Columbus day off.

I like the fact Jim said “when I was working”. Makes me want to quit my day job and write a blog too.

    Good for you Jim.

Um-no financial news today? I agree with previous post. Americans work way too hard. The economic benefits of one extra holiday–especially tied to a week-end– are significant.

Ever wonder why there are so many Australian visitors? Look at the free time they have. They typically get five weeks vacation, two weeks sick leave and public holidays as vacation. Yikes.

    just an FYI

christopher columbus’ real name is christopher columbo.

he switched it to a more latin-sounding name because that’s what people did back then to sound more old school and cool.
