I read a recent history of Wall Street and it was amazing. I didn't realize there were only a handful of companies to start and they used to trade outdoors for the first few decades! And the bell actually replaced a Chinese Gong that was there to announce the start and stop of trading.

The Russell 3000 is probably your best broad index for U.S. Stocks. But you're right, the media continues to quote the Dow Jones out of pure habit.

By the way, to add to your trivia. GE has not continuously remained in the Dow Jones Industrial Index. It was removed in 1898, but brought back in nine years later as a replacement for Tennessee Coal and Iron. I wonder how much a share of Tennessee Coal and Iron bought in 1907 would be worth today? How about GE?

I appreciate the insight. Its the little concise (and humorous!) comparisons like this that help boost the base level knowledge of the people. Plus, a finance guru with a sense of humor is definitely hard to find nowadays!
