How To Get Your 2008 Stimulus Rebate Check Faster
Have you been awaiting word on when you expect your stimulus package? First, check the stimulus calculator located near the end of my original 2008 Stimulus Package Explained article. If you are eligible for a check, when you can expect it will depend on the last two digits of your social security number.
If they have your direct deposit information available on file, then you follow this schedule:
- 00 - 20: May 2
- 21 - 75: May 9
- 76 - 99: May 16
If they do not have your direct deposit information, then this is your schedule:
- 00 - 09: May 16
- 10 - 18: May 23
- 19 - 25: May 30
- 26 - 38: June 6
- 39 - 51: June 13
- 52 - 63: June 20
- 64 - 75: June 27
- 76 - 87: July 4
- 88 - 99: July 11
So if your social security number is 000-00-0034 then you will receive the stimulus package amount on May 9th if you have direct deposit and you will receive the stimulus package check on June 6th. As you can see, you get the money nearly a month earlier if they have your direct deposit information.
How do you give them your direct deposit information? You give it to them when you file your return. Be sure to input your direct deposit information on your 1040 on line 74 (a-d). Once they have it there, you can get your check considerably sooner. Don’t be a fool, direct deposit.

SDXB (Semi-Demi-Ex-Boyfriend) says he got his “stimulus” payment already: direct deposited on March 14.
Maybe these are the “pay no later than” dates, rather than the dates the checks will be cut?

I find that extremely difficult to believe. He may have received his refund if he filed his taxes in late February but there’s no way he received his stimulus payment already.

What if you (are so unfortunate that you made more money than you thought you were going to and) have to pay taxes? Can you put your deposit information on the 1040 still so you can get your stimulus check sooner? Or are you just stuck waiting because you took a small interest-free loan from Uncle Sam all of last year?
pcooper responds:

Scott: Yes, put the direct deposit information on your return anyway.

Zook: I think that they probably take the SSN of the person that you list first (”your social security number”). So, I would put whoever has the lower last two digits on that line, and put the other person’s SSN under “spouse’s social security number.”

Jim,
On your referenced page further explaining the rebate check RE: the 2008 tax year, you’re actually wrong. Here are the facts per http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=179181,00.html , the IRS FAQ site regarding these kinds of issues:
“…
Q. If I apply my refund to my 2008 taxes, what happens to my stimulus payment?
A. You will still receive a stimulus payment; it will not be applied to your 2008 taxes.
…
Q. Will the payment I receive in 2008 reduce my 2008 refund or increase the amount I owe for 2008?
A. No, the stimulus payment will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.
…”
I’m not sure where you got your information concerning how this rebate check is a “borrow” from one’s 2008 refund, because the IRS says it isn’t.
Always checking facts,
-Phil

Lynne Choate responds:

Under certain circumstances, however, the IRS has decided that taxpayers can only get their rebates by mail, even if they get their refunds by direct deposit. At TurboTax, this will happen if you use a “refund transfer” when filing your 2007 return. This service lets you pay for your tax preparation and/or e-filing from your refund proceeds, for an additional fee, under an agreement with Santa Barbara Bank & Trust .
The IRS also says that taxpayers who use “refund anticipation loans” or RALs (loans made to tax filers against their expected refunds) will also be unable to receive their rebates by direct deposit. TurboTax does not offer RALs.

Rebate will be mailed…file a change of address with the postal service and form 8822 with the IRS.
Anonymous: need to know if i am eligible for stimulus return if my daughter’s father claimed her but irs kept his refund due to child support and also being that i recieve disability for her in 2007?
You will not get the rebate for her directly because you did not claim her as a dependent. If the taxpayer currently has his return withheld for back child support, it will go to that fund.
Nick:they usually keep my refund and put it towards the owed amount.
WIll they take this also???
YES.

Bernardlj responds:

I find it hard to believe “anyone” receiving the check already, since “they claim” they won’t start “mailing” them out until May. However, yes, direct deposit would be faster than having it mailed to you. Also, I have received a notice from the IRS stating that you had to have at least $3,000.00 of “qualifying income” to receive a Stimulus payment, and that the payment will be only $300.00 for a single person, $600.00 for “joint filers.” If you earned less than $3,000.00 last year you won’t get a Stimulus payment, plus, even if you don’t need to file, like if you only receive Social Security payments, you still need to file a tax form to get a Stimulus payment. I used the ezTaxReturn website, a site listed on the IRS web site, to file my taxes, but used the TaxACT to help my retired Dad to file, so I could click on the option, on a “pull-down menu,” to file “only” to get the Stimulus payments, because the other site just says that he didn’t have to file and to “have a nice day.” If you had $75,000.00 or more, your payment will be reduced, but if you have “qualifying” children, you’re supposed to get $300.00 for each child too. Have a Great Day, Bernardlj
Bernardlj responds:
Posted: March 31st, 2008 at 9:58 pm
However, this notice also states that if your “Net Income Tax Liability” was more than $0.00, then quote: “Your Stimulus payment is your net income tax liability up to $600.00 (or $1,200 for joint filers). However, generally your stimulus payment will not be less than $300.00 ($600.00 for joint filers).” Unquote. It also shows that if you earned zero dollars last year that you’ll get $300.00, or $600.00 for joint filers. Again, Have a great Day, Bernardlj
Bernardlj responds:
Posted: March 31st, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Oops, the “earned zero dollars” part of my last post was supposed to be erased…I meant to say that if your “tax liability” was zero dollars then you’d get $300.00.

Did I read correctly in that you will only receive $300 for dependents under the age of 17? What about the dependents who are 20 and full-time students? I have a dependent who is 20 and made more than the required amount to not file a return. So, according to what I read I won’t get the rebate for her and she won’t get it either because she was my dependent. Technically you are paying more for those dependents than some younger ones. It certainly seems as though some individuals who could really use the money were left out of this plan.

My son and I receive Social Security benefits for about 7 months. My husband and I filed together with our son as a dependable and his mother cause he takes care of her thru the months. Would I still have to file a 1040A for my son, reason I asked they sent me a form for him. Also would my husband get a check in his name for all 3 he carried on his return. Because he is the only one to get wages from a job.

shorty, if your dependents are over 17, a seperate return must be filed using his S.S. benefits. If under 17 your husband will get credit for him. As for his mother she must file her own return listing her s.s. benefits or pension benefits.

Regarding direct deposit, I don’t know if these people are going with personal experience or just what they’ve read, but years ago after mailing my 1040 with no dir. dep info (and due a refund) I sent out a separate Form 8888 (typically used for multiple deposit accounts) to the IRS with my checking/routing info on it and actually received my refund electronically. I spoke with a local IRS office employee beforehand who was not optimistic, but I went ahead anyway. I attached a brief signed letter with my SSN and signature and a voided copy of my check. It can be done.

Someone talked about whether or not you’d receive a stimulus payment or not, and if I read this notice correctly, the stimulus payment is supposed to be a separate thing from your tax liability, but I also mentioned in an earlier post, talking about what the stimulus payment would be, if you had a tax liability, so who knows what will occur…We’ll just need to wait and see…I hope that it would be $600.00 for me, but I’m thinking that I’ll get $300.00, because this new computer uses Windows Vista Home Premium, and some things that I used before will no longer work, because there isn’t a Windows Vista driver available for it, like my GE webcam, and also the Agfa EPhoto CL18 digital camera for two examples, and it appears as though there isn’t going to be an updated driver for it, so the camera is no useless to me, so I’d like to buy either a different digital camera, or maybe a camcorder, if it’s one that has a built-in hard drive in it, and maybe the capability of also saving “still-frame pictures.”
Bernardlj responds:
Posted: April 7th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Re: “Do we have to pay it back?” I’d say no as the government wants you to spend the stimulus payment, to “stimulate the economy,” but I’m wondering just what it’s actually going to do, spending millions of dollars sending these stimulus payments out? Maybe it will “back-fire” on “us” or “them.”

The government and media have made a big deal out of the fact that checks won’t be mailed out until May 16. If someone had received their tax rebate check at this point, it would have hit the news wire big time and the IRS would be explaining it in the news. The lucky recipients wouldn’t be at Bob Evans, they would be on the Today show bragging to Meredith Viera.

I curios how the stimulus check will work if you did a rapid refund through h and r block. because the money was direct deposited into their account at the time of the taxes filing. We did this before we knew of any stimulus checks and now we are wondering will our stimulus check also be direct deposited to the Hand R block account and if so how will we get this???
Melissa responds:

I called H & R Block and they said the stimulus payment would be mailed, not DD.

Chuck responds:

Melissa, did you have a RAL (rapid anticipation loan) or just regular direct deposit through H&R Block? Because i know if you got a RAL that the IRS will not be DD the stimulaus payment because another bank deposits your money into your account, but I was unsure about if you just use the regular return method on HR Blocks website.

I think the rebates are only direct deposited or mailed - they aren’t put on any type of debit card (if that is what an H & R card is)- you also don’t get the rebate direct deposited it you took out a RAL.
If you didn’t put your direct deposit info on your 2007 tax return, the rebate will be mailed. The IRS does not go back to previous returns to look for direct deposit info.

My ex is 1400 behind.
thebigidea responds:

Not sure anyone can answer this, but I appreciate any help.
I owe $1300 in child support arrears (not a deadbeat, i gladly pay $600/mo to help my ex care for our daughter - it’s from when we first split up and I was unemployed, and i’ve been paying it off). I also owe $6000 in fed taxes for 2006 (my first foray into self employment - not so good at bookkeeping).
I am claiming my child for 2007. It says I am owed a refund of $200, and am eligible for $900 rebate. I am worried it will go to back taxes, rather than to pay child support arrears. I’d rather the government wait for their money than for my kid to wait for hers. Can anyone say from authority or experience which debt takes priority for the refund+rebate?
Thanks.

My husband and I filed our taxes together. He owe’s back child support from his previous relationship and they usually take his refund yearly. If we filed jointly, will I still get my refund check or will they take the total amount ($1200)? I shouldn’t get penalized, it’s not something I owe. Thanks!!
anonymous responds:
Posted: April 18th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Mommy1: By $1,200.00 do you mean the rebate? If you file jointly and the refund goes to his delinquent child support, and he is not caught up yet, then the rebate will go to settle your joint obligation to the child he owes. He is apparently the primary SSN on the return.
That is the responsibility you took on by filing jointly with him - as far as taxes owed and given rebates, it is BOTH of your obligation to pay off the money owed.
The government is not going to take the time to seperate the rebate into “his” and “hers” checks, so you will not receive $600.00
If paying these delinquent payments bothers you so much, file your taxes seperately from his from now on.
anonymous responds:
Posted: April 18th, 2008 at 10:03 am
Mommy- an addendum to the above post: Do you know about the Injured Spouse Form (Form 8379)? It’s too late for you to file the form for this year’s refund and rebate, but from now on, if it’s in your best financial interest to file jointly with your husband and you have earned income, you should file that form when you do your taxes. From my understanding, if you had mailed out that form prior to April 15th (it can be mailed seperate from the return) you would have received your $600, contingent on you not owing anything yourself. It would also allow you any refund due based on your income and other credits.

Just wait, allright! Can’t wait to spend it???
anonymous responds:
Posted: April 18th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Mommy - I stand corrected. It is not too late for you to fill out a 8379 for either your share of a refund or the rebate. If you have any individual income, earned or not, it would be in your best interest to look into that.
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8379.pdf
It won’t hurt for you to fill it out and send it in as soon as possible, even if you don’t work outside the home. Do you have a checking account or any other account that is in your name only? You could put that interest earned on the form under income “allocated to injured spouse”. even if it was just a few cents, this form may allow you to eventually get your $600.00 given that the IRS will now be notified.
People who file 8379 and have a spouse who owes back child support, student loans, etc. will get their fair share of the rebate.

This is a response from an IRS rep… This is valid.
“If you did a Direct Deposit to an Emerald Card, then the Tax Rebate will be Direct Deposited to the same Emerald Card account. If you took a Refund Anticipation Loan, Refund Anticipation Check or other settlement product and had that settlement product deposited to an Emerald Card, the the Tax Rebate will be in the form of a check mailed to the address used on your tax return as it involved a temporary bank account and the IRS will not recognize this account for Direct Deposit.”
Sheryl responds:

The reason it gets deposited onto the card is because it was set up as a “direct deposit into the H&R block account associated with the card” It will be direct deposited as long as you didnt do a RAL or other loan service

Q. I chose direct deposit for my 2007 tax refund but also requested a Refund Anticipation Loan (RAL) from my preparer. How does that affect my stimulus payment?
A. Taxpayers who use RALs or enter into any other loan or financial agreement with their tax professional cannot receive their stimulus payments by Direct Deposit and instead will get a paper check.
