How To Get Your 2008 Stimulus Rebate Check Faster

Have you been awaiting word on when you expect your stimulus package? First, check the stimulus calculator located near the end of my original 2008 Stimulus Package Explained article. If you are eligible for a check, when you can expect it will depend on the last two digits of your social security number.

If they have your direct deposit information available on file, then you follow this schedule:

  • 00 – 20: May 2
  • 21 – 75: May 9
  • 76 – 99: May 16

If they do not have your direct deposit information, then this is your schedule:

  • 00 – 09: May 16
  • 10 – 18: May 23
  • 19 – 25: May 30
  • 26 – 38: June 6
  • 39 – 51: June 13
  • 52 – 63: June 20
  • 64 – 75: June 27
  • 76 – 87: July 4
  • 88 – 99: July 11

So if your social security number is 000-00-0034 then you will receive the stimulus package amount on May 9th if you have direct deposit and you will receive the stimulus package check on June 6th. As you can see, you get the money nearly a month earlier if they have your direct deposit information.

How do you give them your direct deposit information? You give it to them when you file your return. Be sure to input your direct deposit information on your 1040 on line 74 (a-d). Once they have it there, you can get your check considerably sooner. Don’t be a fool, direct deposit. :)

  1. SDXB (Semi-Demi-Ex-Boyfriend) says he got his “stimulus” payment already: direct deposited on March 14.

Maybe these are the “pay no later than” dates, rather than the dates the checks will be cut?

  2. jim says:

I find that extremely difficult to believe. He may have received his refund if he filed his taxes in late February but there’s no way he received his stimulus payment already.

  3. MT says:

How do you confirm that you filed a tax return in 2006?
I am trying to confirm this for my mom.

  4. Zook says:

If you file jointly, which SS# do they take?

  5. Scott says:

What if you (are so unfortunate that you made more money than you thought you were going to and) have to pay taxes? Can you put your deposit information on the 1040 still so you can get your stimulus check sooner? Or are you just stuck waiting because you took a small interest-free loan from Uncle Sam all of last year?

  6. pcooper says:

Scott: Yes, put the direct deposit information on your return anyway.

    See this:

    Q. If I’m not expecting a refund, should I still fill out the direct deposit line on my return so I can get my stimulus payment direct deposited?

    A. Yes. Even if you aren’t due a refund on your tax return, filling out the bank routing information will allow for your stimulus payment to be direct deposited.

  7. Finance Girl says:

Zook: I think that they probably take the SSN of the person that you list first (“your social security number”). So, I would put whoever has the lower last two digits on that line, and put the other person’s SSN under “spouse’s social security number.”

  8. Phil says:

    Jim,

On your referenced page further explaining the rebate check RE: the 2008 tax year, you’re actually wrong. Here are the facts per http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=179181,00.html , the IRS FAQ site regarding these kinds of issues:

    “…
    Q. If I apply my refund to my 2008 taxes, what happens to my stimulus payment?

    A. You will still receive a stimulus payment; it will not be applied to your 2008 taxes.

    Q. Will the payment I receive in 2008 reduce my 2008 refund or increase the amount I owe for 2008?

    A. No, the stimulus payment will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.
    …”

I’m not sure where you got your information concerning how this rebate check is a “borrow” from one’s 2008 refund, because the IRS says it isn’t.

    Always checking facts,

    -Phil

  9. jim says:

Thanks for the clarification Phil, I’ve made the adjustment to the referenced page. Thanks!

  10. brian says:

can i give the irs my direct deposit info even though i already recieved my refund check?

  11. LASHAWNDA GARTH says:

I HAVE A CHANGE OF ADDRESS SINCE I RECEIVE MY REBATE IN JAN. HOW DO I HAVE MY REBATE DIRECT DEPOSIT

  12. Nicole says:

If we always filed direct deposit but this year we did a refund anticipation loan are we still eligible for the early date?
Just curious how that will work this year.
    Thank you

  13. kelly says:

I got one for ya. I got my tax refund on an H&R block debit card. So will the stimulus go back on that card or will I get a paper check?

  14. JAMES WILEY JR says:

I DID NOT RECEIVE AN STIMULUS PACKAGE INFO DOES THIS MEAN THAT i AM NOT ELIGIBLE.

  15. randy cooper says:

if you file a extention will you still recieve a check?

  16. Philip Keyworth says:

I worked for 35 years and now am out on disability and am being told I dont get the rebate. I paid taxes all 35 years because I don’t have a taxable income my children and I don’t deserve this rebate? I am out of work due to employer neglect and I loose again.

  17. MICHAEL ALLEN says:

If i recieved the earned income tax credit, am I eligible for the stimulous check?

  18. Rhonda says:

My son pays child support. His whole return went towards that. Will the rebate go to him or child support?

  19. Rheba says:

With this STIMULUS REBATE, will we have to file a 1099 and pay taxes on the REBATE for 2008?

  20. Jacqueline says:

So if we did TurboTax and had it directly deopsited, do we receive this refund as direct deposit also, even though TurboTax is not run through the govenment? Thanks

  21. Beverly Kephart says:

I pay child support and claimed my daughter this year on 2007 tax year. Will I receive the rebate check only? or will myself and the father also receive a check?

  22. Lynne Choate says:

Under certain circumstances, however, the IRS has decided that taxpayers can only get their rebates by mail, even if they get their refunds by direct deposit. At TurboTax, this will happen if you use a “refund transfer” when filing your 2007 return. This service lets you pay for your tax preparation and/or e-filing from your refund proceeds, for an additional fee, under an agreement with Santa Barbara Bank & Trust .

The IRS also says that taxpayers who use “refund anticipation loans” or RALs (loans made to tax filers against their expected refunds) will also be unable to receive their rebates by direct deposit. TurboTax does not offer RALs.

  23. Rebecca says:

Are we to pay taxes on the STIMULUS REBATE or will it be taken out?

  24. julie dotson says:

how do you get your rebate check if you filed rapid and you have changed your address? and can i still send in to IRS a direct deposit number even if i didnt put it on my return this 2007 year?

  25. nick says:

I owe the IRS some money on back taxes, not much, a little more than the stimulus check.
they usually keep my refund and put it towards the owed amount.
    WIll they take this also???
    peace
    Nick
