I always take a look at it when I get it, but I also assume that I won't receive anything from SS when I retire.

I was reading through my SS statement a couple months back. It says right there on the statement that the money will run in 2041 or 2042 (can't remember exactly). Coincidentally, this is 2-3 years before I'm eligible to receive SS benefits.

Exactly. I have a well developed retirement fund for someone my age (mid 20's), but it scares me to see how few of my peers do.

40 years? Something in my gut tells me not to even bother looking at the statement. The chances of receiving a benefit 40 years down the road is slim to none. I suspect the system will be completely changed by then. There is no way that the current system can sustain itself. So when the politicians run out of fancy ways to rob peter to pay paul, it is going to get interesting.

"We’re not relying on the full value of Social Security for our retirement in 40 years"

Smart choice. I assume a SS payout of $0 when doing retirement planning. If there is some money, great. If not, I won't be disappointed.

"is the retirement benefit estimate in today’s dollars? Will that number be adjusted for inflation over time?"

The estimate you see on the statement is in todays dollars. The statement doesn't have inflation adjusted figure on it. SS has annual inflation adjustment though.

We're not relying on the full value of Social Security for our retirement in 40 years... but just out of curiousity, is the retirement benefit estimate in today's dollars? Will that number be adjusted for inflation over time? Or does the number self-inflate and self-adjust as you get salary increases?

Its funny, I was just having a conversation about this with someone yesterday!

I got my statement a couple weeks ago. I think its interesting to read over even though I don't pay in to SS as my job has a different retirement system. I'd like to eventually get a second job that pays in so I have the full number of credits and collect whatever is left by the time I retire.

Great information to know. I tossed this statement aside when I last received it, but it's good to read over it to make sure everything looks good.
