I Hate U-Haul Truck Rental (And So Does Everyone Else)

U-Haul is, in my personal opinion, quite possibly one of the most poorly managed businesses still in business and the only way they get away with it is because they’re almost the only game in town. The U stands for Unreliable. Ask anyone if they’ve ever had or heard of someone having a bad experience with U-Haul and prepare yourself for an intricate story about how U-Haul screwed them This is exactly what happened to me this weekend. (I added to the title because everyone else hates U-Haul too!)
I was to help my girlfriend and her roommate move out of their apartment in New Jersey starting at 10am on Saturday. The night before, her roommate called and confirmed (the guy said they had the truck on site and she could pick it up at 10ish the next day) that the truck they reserved was ready for us tomorrow. She calls the next day right before she is supposed to leave – truck isn’t there. Truck was never there. In the general area, there were no one-way trucks available for rental because it was the end of the month and they were all booked (reserved! ha!). We didn’t get a truck until 7pm, didn’t depart until 11pm, and worked all through the night until 6am unpacking.
One year ago, when my roommate and I moved out of our apartment (and into another), we too ran into the same situation. The U-Haul site had decided, even with our reservation, to rent our truck out to a walk-in customer because they didn’t know if we would show up. We didn’t get a truck that day until 2pm. This year, we opted to use a minivan from a reputable rental agency.
U-Haul is unreliable and dishonest. While they’ll gladly take your cancellation fee, they won’t give you any money if they screw you and rent out a truck you need. Most of the time we’re talking about end of the month moves where you need to follow a strict schedule in order to check out of the apartment, complete the final walk-through, and get on your way. If we didn’t move, we would have to continue paying a rent because of U-Haul’s unreliability. Don’t call it a reservation if you don’t reserve anything.
My fellow bloggers who read this, write a post about how U-Haul has screwed you and trackback to this one. Non-bloggers, send this to a friend and have them comment and/or pass it along. Spread the word, like a virus, that U-Haul is a business that should go down the tubes.
If you need to move, use these alternatives (I haven’t used them but U-Haul has screwed me two out of two times, so I’d use any of these before U-Haul ever again):
- Budget/Ryder – Ryder was acquired by Budget, so try Budget for your moving needs.
- Penske – I see their trucks all the time and the drivers are always smiling, so they can’t be all that bad.
- Hertz – Word on the street is that Hertz rents trucks as well.
- Public Storage – Storage companies typically will let you use their truck if you rent from them and with the smallest storage closets running about $30 a month, this is a great deal for in-town moves.
From the comments, it also sounds like even if you get a truck (the “lucky” ones), they aren’t reliable (surprise!) and could die on you.
U-Haul CEO’s Cell Phone Number
Courtesy of the Consumerist:
The CEO of Uhaul gave out his cellphone number last night on an episode of Inside Edition, inviting consumers to call with complaints or questions. Joe Shoen explained saying, “People can’t get this organization to behave, I can.” That number is 602-390-6525.
Let him have it!

Don’t you just love U-Haul? Well I don’t and I work for them. There are so many unfair labor practices, on top of the poor management, it isn’t funny. I’ve been working for them for a couple of years now; and get this, I now make less then the new hires. They upped the pay because minimum wage raised but didn’t bump my pay, then, when it was time for a raise (which is now), I have been totally ignored by all management. Seriously, they are hiring people at a higher wage then I make. Basically, I am being told that if I go to the labor relations board that I am going to be fired. U-Haul’s policy is that they can fire you at any time for no reason on the spot and you can quit for no reason on the spot. Wow, some policy. I’m being ripped off and I can’t quit because there are no other jobs out there. Funny thing is; I am a woman, and all the men make more then me. It’s total bull.
You should really call “labor standards” or “labor relations” in this country and tell them what you put on here. I once worked for a company in Illinois, a work at will state, where you don’t have to give two weeks notice. When I decided to quit a job because of an overbearing boss, I wrote him a letter to tell him why and I didn’t come in Monday morning. He then sent me a letter telling me his lawyer told him that he could change my wages from $12/hr to $5/hr because I quit and minimum wage that all he was required to pay me under the law. Well, I wrote labor standards in Illinois and they said he was completely wrong and what he was doing was completely illegal. So I wrote him back and told him, this might be what your lawyer says, but this is what the Illinois labor standards says. He backed down and paid me what I was owed. he had tried to intimidate me and told me something that seemed legitimate but I called him on it. you should do the same with these people. There should be no reason why this is happening to you. Perhaps you could recover some of what you feel you’ve lost over the time working for these clowns. If they do one illegal thing, you can be sure they’re doing something else shifty, as well. In the case of the place I worked for, he was hiring his techs out at Union Rates (22/hr)and paying them 12/hr, which was also illegal. The tech is supposed to get that wage. I recovered some money there too. Good luck with it.
I am getting ready for a move about half way across the country. I was considering using an outfit called upack. You essentially pack up their trailer and then they drive it to your destination and drop it off. It actually worked out to be the same price as renting 2 uhauls and driving them myself. So it seems like a good way to go. Anyone have any experience with them?
I have used U haul a handful of times and I guess I have been lucky so far. Haven’t had anything major pop up with them.
I have nothing but praise for upack by abf. I used them twice, relocating from Seattle to San Diego and then San Diego to Connecticut. Their customer service is incredible, you talk to real people who are very nice and informative..and even steer you towards the most economical option (partial trailer vs container). I did shop around during both moves and found not only are they a good deal but priceless for the simple peace of mind. They are SUPER flexible, I changed the load in location from my apartment (no off street parking) to loading at their terminal which saves you money too and terminal is open late. I was delayed in my travels and they kept my shipment and dropped off when and where I needed it – waiving a day or two extra storage costs. Go use them and never look back! BTW, I couldn’t load the trailer at my apartment (no off street parking) so I had to rent a U Haul to bring my stuff to the terminal to load – and guess what, two days later I’m half way across the country only to find out that the U Haul claimed I broke a tail light on their vehicle (which I didn’t) and charged me without notification. AND I had bought the “covers all” insurance to boot!
FYI, was also thinking of driving a uhaul across the country and was told by others who had done it that you pay for any savings in both gas money and time…passed many poor U haulers who were barely doing 40 mph up hills, many breakdowns, bad on road service, etc.
Gosh you folks must live in wrong part of the country. I have had many dealings with the local U-Haul here in Va. and have never had anything but pleasant dealings with them.. I have bought boxes, rented trucks and even gotten good packing advice from them. Could not have ask for better service.
The LA Times ran an expose of U-Haul about a year ago. It’s an interesting read, if you want to dig it up in the archives. Basically, the paper showed that the company was mismanaged, the trucks were dangerous, and that some people had been in serious accidents because of negligence. I’ve used U-Haul to move several times, with okay experiences, but after reading the expose, I realize how lucky I was!
Everybody hates something in life. And one of yours is U Haul. I myself haven’t ever had any problems with them. In fact, they’ve went out of their way to help.
Lest we forget, we’re in a “dog-eat-dog world. All people have bad experiences with someone. So suck it up and get on with life. I’m sure this isn’t the only bad experience you’ve ever had.
Hi
I have never had problems with them. They were needed when I arrived int own and was able to use their storage for rates affordable. The employees assisted me each time I went there. I rented a truck to move in town and it was there. I think it has to do with management. Why would a widely known company reserve a truck and when you call to pick it up, it is not there? Sounds like some management problems as well as lack of automobiles available. Why take the customers money? It sounds like a case that needs investigating by the Consumer Board. Otherwise as the previous poster stated go on with with your life. At least you did something about it so the anger will not build up.However if it is a crucial problem (ex. money exhausted, children, family, lost home, job, sickness) call the city emergency line.
I do agree with the employee, i used to work to this company for a very long time 8 years, they say they truly care about their employees,”THAT IS BIG BULL S” the most un professional managers they can be, its all about the corporation and screw every one else no exceptions. They are careless about problem solving with customers, unethical about many things, for example 3 monitor calls if you fail you are out, must answer phones, make reservations, pull trucks for customers, clean the crappy trucks because no one cares to care enough to clean them before sending them out, must be done all at the same time, what ever comes first do it! i got so sick i had to go to the hospital, expectations are extremely high for a low pay job. u-haul- does sucks i am so happy i am not there anymore.
Wow. You dont know much about business and capitilism do you?
UHAUL sucks for both renting and empolyee…I gave that company 7 years of my life..it went as far as having my husband work for the company and moved the whole dang family thinking it was a smart move..well after the move being a manger for 3 years i found out wrong….just cause you dont kiss the mcp butt he dont like you.Well i dont kiss any butt. The job was getting done.WEll in the end we had to move becaause they transfere me and my husband lost his job.but the mcp refused to let my husband get his unemployment.i not only lost my job as well because the gm were i was transfered from hated me he some how got his job back.after being told once u are put on the do not rehire list you can never get ur job back..that a line of bull.a month The month we moved i lost my hubby and than lost my job.The reason why hubby left was because he couldn’t support his family and feels like a failure and now not only do i feel like a failure but giving a company my 7 years of life and hard working for this company to not be able to support my kids like i did..this company is a joke and no one should work or rent from them.THEY SCREW PEOPLE OFF BIG TIME!!!!
My name is Maria Palmisano and I am with U-Haul International. I would like to relay my sincere apology for the inconvenience you, your girlfriend, and her roommate experienced due to the delay in receiving the needed truck to make the move. A delay in filling a reservation can be due to a number of reasons and include customers not returning equipment on time or the appropriate location, as well as equipment malfunction. I would like to find out the U-Haul location involved to further follow up on the information you provided to ensure our customers are receiving the quality of service they have come to expect and deserve from U-Haul. I can be reached at maria_palmisano@uhaul.com.
I did read other comments in reference to your post and found many positive stories. Please be assured we value our customers and realize moving can be very stressful without added frustration of trying to secure the needed equipment. Our goal has always been to make moving easier. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.
isn’t if funny how Maria from the uhi reads all these post and only comments on the the renters probs when is uhi gonna take care of all the things the there mcp and mcvp do and treat there employees and how fast they can ruin a family..
that tells me even mr Joe Shoen dont care about his company and the people who are running it for him or his brother.Goes to show you that they dont care as long as they have there money rolling in
To all the complainers out there- There are many things you can do if you feel cheated or wronged by a business. Try doing something positive by complaining to the right people instead of trying to ruin businesses by complaining to the wrong people. When you look at the quality of people who are writing about working for Uhaul – maybe you can understand why there are such problems in the company. Quite frankly “unemployed” has no concept of how to put words together to form coherent sentences, nor does she have a concept of the english language, how to spell or use proper grammar. I am assuming she meant she was manager rather than a “manger” and if all she can do is speak of her mistreatment, rather than be thankful for the fact she at least had a job that was paying the bills, I am sure she was NOT very good with customers or in any way had a concept of what customer service means.
Most companies don’t know the extent of the problems with their employees unless dissatisfied customers notify them and take the time to get the names of the people who made the mistakes or were outright rude.
Let those who are so dissatisfied with their jobs QUIT instead of complaining, and try and find that perfect job where they will make the sort of money they want with no expectations of them having to put forth any effort. Then maybe someone who is appreciative of having a job can take their places. When you work in an industry that is based on serving the public, you are going to be required to be personable and have the ability and willingness to go the extra mile. If you don’t, the company will make no money and that puts you at risk of losing your job anyway.
If everyone would treat others they way they would like to be treated and take a personal interest in doing the best job they can regardless of what is required then at least they would have the satisfaction of a job well done and may even have brightened someone elses day. Walk around with a smile and you get a smile in return. Speak with gentleness and you can solve the problem before it becomes a problem; but walk around with a bad attitude that says you hate your job and detest dealing with the public and others from customers to management are going to treat you the exact same way.
For those of you complainers who want to complain about the service they received – report it and allow the company to make it up to you. There are very few service industries that want the customer to walk away dissatisfied for the exact reason you came to this site. They do not want word of mouth complaints to be passed along. They may not compensate you for what you want, but I can guarantee you that they will try to do something to rectify the situation. Personally I have used U-haul for local moves, state to state moves and 2 cross country moves and have never had 1 problem. Maybe I don’t have the high expectations that others do, or maybe it’s just that I have managed companies and know exactly what happens when you have many employees distributed all over the country – you will find many who will never be satisfied with anything…you give them a raise–it’s never enough…you throw a picnic or a party for them and they say they would rather have had the money…it’s never ending because society has become so greedy and “me” oriented that no one is ever satisfied.
Why can’t everyone who is complaining look at the fact that they eventually got moved, their families are healthy and together, or they at least have a job when so many are unemployed. There are many things to be thankful for but if you walk around with blinders on you will continue to live in the dark. Try opening your eyes, put yourself in someone else’s shoes and walk a mile, find something good or enjoyable about your day and if you can’t, then go do something for someone else so you have something for which you can be proud!
And by the way…Uhaul now has a policy where you will get the equipment, location and pickup time that you agreed to or they will give you $50!
listen american way
and about this…..And by the way…Uhaul now has a policy where you will get the equipment, location and pickup time that you agreed to or they will give you $50!
they work around it.they say that but in the end if you make agreement that it is ok for you to pick up a truck at a location and it happens that traffic decides to move it which half the times they call the night before so you can’t say no because you need it and when you bring that up about the 50. they say well you agreed to it and there is nothing they can do.
AND AS FOR THIS….
Why can’t everyone who is complaining look at the fact that they eventually got moved, their families are healthy and together, or they at least have a job when so many are unemployed. There are many things to be thankful for but if you walk around with blinders on you will continue to live in the dark. I AM PROUD THAT I NO LONGER WORK FOR A COMPANY THAT KEEPS PEOPLE IN THE STORAGE THAT HAS MOVED OUT AND THAN WHEN IT IS DUE WAIT 4 TO 15 DAYS LATER WHEN THE CUSTOMER FINALLY CALLS IN AND SAY WE MOVED OUT MONTHS AGO BECAUSE A WALK AROUND ISN’T BEING MADE.OR WHEN THEY TELL YOU TO RUN A PERSON CHARGE CARD AFTER THE TWO LATE FEES GET ADDED ON THAT WILL GET THEM TO CALL IN..AND THAN WHEN PEOPLE CALL IN AND SAY THEY CHARGED A CARD THAT DONT BELONG TO THEM..YOU THAN HAVE TO HAVE THAT PERSON COME IN PROOF IT ISN’T THE PERSON.LIKE SOMEONE WANTS TO COME IN AND DO THIS.I AM SORRY THE ONLY TIME SOMEONE CARD SHOULD BE CHARGED IS THE ONES ON AUTO PAYMENT.
O AND DONT LET THIS FOOL YOU PEOPLE. WHEN THEY SAY I WILL SETTLE FOR JUST HALF OR A CERTAIN AMOUNT WHEN UNIT IS UP FOR AUCTION AND THEY SAY ALL IS GOOD AND YOU WONT BE BUGGED ANYMORE.YOU WILL IN FACT KEEP GETTING LETTERS TO PAY UP.AND IF IT ISN’T PAID THAN GUESS WHAT IT DOES GO ON UR CREDIT REPORT EVEN IF YOU MOVED OUT AND THEY WANTED TO KEEP YOUR NAME IN THE COMPUTER TO TO SHOW THAT THERE STORAGE IS GOING UP AND NOT FALLING DOWN..because as soon as the storage goes down the managers get hell and there jobs threaten if they don’t bring the numbers up.at every end of the month meeting that what is done to anyone who runs a storage place or has storage on there grounds..
so american way do you think a person should go to a job everyday do there all and be threaten all the time.
american way
we did voice our voices to the advp and his answer was if i override the mcp what will tell all the other people in the mco? umm that you don’t agree with what he is doing!
also when you go to your mcp and ask for help on ideas to get people in and send emails after emails or like when you have a real big problem like no water for two weeks and he refuses to answer the phone you tell me american way what more can you do.than to come to find out he was told to get it fixed and was approved to have it fixed what did he do wait till it got the county involved and used that against us because he didn’t do his job.sorry but i will never have anything nice to say about anyone in that mco.or for uhual
Everyone is out for a buck these days and you can never be to sure. I say if possible dont call and make reservations in person. Forgive and forget.Pray, live, love, laugh and remember you are still living and try not to let anything stress you if possible. Especially other peoples ignorance because Karma is a “B”!
Oh, and try not to let a few bad apples spoil the whole tree. Its poor management. That’s why one Burger king may be dirty and food greasy and another gets A plus.
I have had problems while helping other people move. They reserved a truck, but when they went to pick it up, there were none available. Worked out perfectly for me, because by the time they did get something, I had a prior engagement and got out of helping them. hehe.
The only time I have personally used UHaul is with one of their trailers (once was a car trailer and once was a box trailer). Both times we just walked in without reservations (they aren’t as in-demand like their box trucks). Once we had them they were no problem (tough for a trailer to break down).
The author shows in their text the problem why they couldn’t get a truck;
“The night before, her roommate called and confirmed (the guy said they had the truck on site and she could pick it up at 10ish the next day) that the truck they reserved was ready for us tomorrow… In the general area, there were no one-way trucks available for rental because it was the end of the month and they were all booked (reserved! ha!).”
Several issue aren’t mentioned on this posting. First, the only indication of reserving a vehicle is that it was done the night before the move. Second, it doesn’t state whether or not they were trying the rental at a UHaul owned retail center or at a UHaul “dealer”. The majority of UHaul locations are “dealers” and they are principly a business that has trucks and trailers available for rental and get commission. Some of the dealers are great, some are terrible.
I have worked in the real estate and moving environment for years. I have used UHaul, Penske, Budget and Enterprise for moves both residental and commercial. I have to say that my experience with UHaul at corporate owned locations has always been very possitive and only a few of the “dealers” have been poor. Budget rental trucks were good in condition, but ALOT of added expenses tagged onto the bill at the end of the rental that was never pointed out prior to signing the contract.
The end of each month there is ALWAYS a large number of people moving. To call to reserve a vehicle to move things on a Friday night and EXPECT any company to have that vehicle available on Saturday morning is rediculous and unrealistic. One has to wonder why the author didn’t reserve the vehicle weeks in advance, not at the last minute.
To put it in a different perspective, if you knew you were going to fly on an airline from the East Coast to the West Coast during the Christmas Season, would you wait until the night BEFORE your expected flight to see if a seat was available, or would you reserve a seat well in advance?
I’m sorry, but I have no sympathy for the author and hopefully they will read my comments and understand that moving at the end of the month does require some advance planning in order to expect ANY company to have equipment available.
I’m yet another unhappy customer that will never use U-Haul again. I rented a car trailer and it was installed by a U-Haul autorized person. When loading car onto trailer the trailer came loose and went into the tailgate on my truck. I had optional U-Haul insurance. insurance company and U-Haul refuses to pay for damage to tailgate – they say since I drove it 30 miles before loading car that it was hooked up properly and is not their fault. Also, I had a brand new 2″ tow hitch on it at failure.
I read the author’s complaints about UHaul’s reservation policy.
While it was wrong of them to say they had a truck for you when they clearly did not, it’s common knowledge that when you make a reservation for anything anywhere (airline, restaurant, car rental, hotel, etc.) it is a MUTUAL COMMITMENT. They will, ideally in this case, have a truck for you PROVIDED that you show up at the appointed place and time. If you don’t (and I’m sure any business that works on a reservation/appointment basis will do this) they will cancel and rent it to someone else.
Furthermore, why did your friend wait so long to make a reservation? She presumably knew when her lease was up, right? Most people do. So is it fair of you to blame UHaul for bad planning on your part? However, the only way that I can say if UHaul screwed up or if you did is if you were late for your reservation or not and your article doesn’t say either way.
uhaul blows, stop commenting on this and realize the plain and simple truth.
blame my goodluck….both my experiences with u-haul were pleasant.
I used budget truck rental and they did not provide a workable product. The tow for the car was rusted and did not allow mobility for the car. We ended up pulling the car off and driving it. The biggest irritation is they do not respond to customer complaints. This is unexceptable. It has been 2 days and they have not returned a phone call. Budget will take your money and run. Talk with your money
Uhual is the worst company to work for, i used to work there, it got so bad because no one did their jobs,no one cared anymore so when i started complaining to the manager he started cutting my hours, from 30-5 a week yes from working 5 days to working They are horrible, you ask a question to your manager and he sends you to the mpc its all back and forth like a ping pong, if they want to get rid of you they will cut your hours they just try to drive you crazy so you can quit and to be able to get unemployment, im glad i got my self a better job, ,DONT WORK FOR 716066, 716058, 716074.716071,716071 716069 They are racist, worthless, shitty people most unprofessional, managers you can deal with, they treat Hispanics like shit, and if you don’t know English thats just tooo bad they don’t carethe white like a golden apple and the backs really bad,
i was an employefor19 years. had a car accident and required surgery i came back and was terminated because i could not lift over 50 lbs. i was the company transfer driver. the mcp is a !@#$$%%%%. he should be terminated himself. he needs to get some brains
I will never use uhaul again. I would say to anyone who seeks employment at uhaul dont do it their employment practices should be investigated at the mcp level. I have so much hatered towards uhaul. even th advp would do nothing to help me. DO not use them or work for them
co 813,21700 the employees from top to botton should all be canned. they dont care about the people with families to support. they have no morals.
i hear you on that i agree with you whole heartily…….Paul don’t care as long as he gets a check every week….none of them care..
I agree Uhaul is the worst compamy I have ever worked for. Our mgr is at work less then 30 hrs a week gets paid for 55 (15 of which is time and half) Ive been there for over a yr and still make min wage Mgr says its not in budget to give raises. I work alone six days aweek and do alot of mgr work and MCP is totally aware and does nothing about it. As soon as I can line another job up I am contacting Shoen, interanl investigations among some other ppl to let them know about some real bad shit happening at our local Uhaul
agrees as well with sam
My husband and I traveled up to Wisconsin to empty my parents’ home. We went to pick up our reserved UHaul truck. They were closed because…it was hunting season. The sign on their door said they would be open for only 1 hour the next day because…it was hunting season. Whoop dee doo. After calling UHaul for advice, we went to another rental store in the area. They were closed…no reason given.
The motels were full of hunters so we had to spend the night in my parents’ unheated house with no running water. It was snowing and darn cold.
We went very early the next day, waited in the parking lot with many others driving in after us and waiting for them to open. I was first in line.
When I went to the desk with my papers and told the clerk what size truck was reserved for us, he said, “Well, You’re in luck. We have one.” A woman farther down the line said she wanted that size truck. The smirking clerk said, “Well, I guess you’ll have to fight each other for it.” At his remark, there was silence all around. I said quietly and very firmly to him that I had reserved that truck at his store and that I would certainly take it.
I would have liked to have wiped that smirk right off his jerky face.
When I told my brother what had happened, he said I should have asked the clerk if he were going to supply the jello for the fight.
You people that complain about not receiving trucks are idiots. When do you make your reservations? Night before? 2 days before? Of course we’ll take your reservation – but we also inform you that we will call you to arrange your exact pickup location and time. Oh, you didn’t hear that? Sorry. Oh, you gave us your phone number that is being disconnected?? Uhm…sorry. Not our problem. Why would you give that number out. On the other side, you have a 10am reservation and you show up at 1130 expecting a truck? Do you show up at 12pm for a 11am Doctor’s appointment and still expect to be seen? Get real!! Every business has unhappy customers. Just because you had a bad experience doesn’t mean the company should be shut down and TENS OF THOUSANDS OF EMPLOYEES LEFT JOBLESS!! And to you disgruntled employees, there are ways to air your grievances. From reading what you people said, it is apparent to me that you did not exactly try to rectify your employment situation and chose to blame everyone else. Maybe your hours were cut, but I am a manager of a U-Haul Center, and if I have an employee who is just not cutting it anymore, I cut their hours until they prove they are capable of receiving more hours. This job isn’t hard, its actually pretty easy and laid back, but if you don’t work why would you continue to receive hours?
Point is, there’s posts like everyone’s here about corporations all over the country. The internet has given everyone a chance to voice their opinion on everything from what color socks people should wear to healthcare. And while that is a great thing, be ojbective when making posts like this retarded blogger. You screwed up, admit it, and move on. You got your stuff moved, life is full of hardships. If you want a stress free move, don’t try to pay $19.95 for a truck. Spend a few hundred dollars on a professional moving company to take care of it for you.
I have only once used U-Haul, myself. Someone else made the reservation, he made the reservation MONTHS in advance, we went through a dealer in a slow market, and we made the move mid-month. So, we got our truck…but we had to nurse it through the entire move and it broke down just after (thankfully) we were done.
For all those that are getting all over the author, saying that, “of course you didn’t get the reservation, you only called in the night before,” while it is certainly possible that what you are saying is the case, I read that passage as, “we called in to confirm the reservation,” Meaning that the reservation was already in, they were just calling to confirm. I get that from the “confirmed” part of the text.
Furthermore, even if that wasn’t the case, and it was reserved the night before, I have had plenty of friends (6+) that have made reservations with U-Haul months in advance, only to show up (sometimes early) and being greeted with the news that there is no truck for them.
It was these anecdotal examples that led me to Penske. New truck. Plenty of availability. No problems with my reservation. Great service. Would recommend them highly. Would never risk U-Haul again with Penske being an option… But that’s just my experience.
I rented a storage unit with Uhaul off of Turnbull Bay in New Smyrna Beach Fl for 2 yrs. Everything I owned was in this storage unit. When I opened the storage unit for the first time you could smell a very strong and foul oder but couldnt yet see what it was coming from. Much to my suprise everything in the unit was a total loss all the boxes had been eaten by rats some to the point that there was nothing left of the boxes. My couch had rats nest through out the bottom not to mention it was covered in stains from rat fecal matter and urine. Once everything was pulled out of the unit there was huge piles of rats dropings as well as roach dropings. There were trails of roach dropings even up the walls. I told the manager on site what was going on he himself even offered new boxes to try and repack some of the items. I was given a toll free number to call to make a claim for the loss of which I did on site. After a week I got a call back from one of there claims specialist who then completed the claim. I was told that somebody would get back with me in a few days as to weather or not they were going to except my claim. After 2 weeks I called and was told that the claim was denied because the site manager clamied he had sufficient pest control even after I had sent dozens of pictures to back up my claim. This is a warning to anybody who plans on using U-haul ask to see the pest control records and get renters insurance or better yet use a diffrent company.

The claim that was filed by Ms. Christine was reviewed and denied due to the fact that she chose to procure her own insurance coverage as she listed on her storage rental agreement and did not purchase coverage from U-Haul’s carrier. After careful research of her concerns, a claim could not be approved. Ms. Christine was directed to file a claim with her own carrier. In addition, our U-Haul Storage New Smyrna never had any claims from past customers regarding vermin or insect infestation, from 2004 to present. The standard in the storage industry indicates that the number one reason for rodent infestation at a storage facility is customers storing food items or accidentally moving vermin or insects into the storage facility themselves. As a customer-goodwill gesture, the U-Haul staff provided Ms. Fuller with boxes to repack her items. U-Haul makes every effort to be both responsive to and empathetic with all customer concerns about product and service. However, in this case we found no fault on the part of U-Haul.
understand that the end of the month is the busiest time of the month cause all the evictions have to move b4 the first
I have been bent over a barrel by U-Haul too many times to count. Doesn’t seem to matter about the location or city your in. Trucks were never available on time, even if they were already onsite and were unreliable.
I’ve had the absolute worst experience with U-Haul, and it has nothing to do with the company’s trucks. Just a simple storage unit. The issue is with customer service – there honestly are people working at the New York Chelsea U-Haul that could care less if you die tomorrow. The bigger issue is how nobody, nobody can help you manage your account unless you actually physically go the the location. The most fun I’ve had is trying to get them to figure out why I get charged a $15 late fee on my account, which, oh yeah, is set up for automatic pay. So I guess my automatic pay is late?!? Ha. They still can’t figure out why that’s happening and simply just transfer me to someone else when it starts to become too much work to fix. So far, I’ve been transferred seven times and still no luck. If you can afford a different option, do it! If not, be sure to factor in automatic pay late fees on your account, or, essentially at least an additional $15 a month from the agreed-upon, contract-signed price. U-Haul is ghetto.
My name is Maria Palmisano and I am with U-Haul International. I first want to relay my apology for the inconvenience you experienced at our U-Haul Center. I have reviewed the information you provided with our Storage Manager and Executive Assistant for the U-Haul Company of Manhattan/Bronx, NY. We would like to personally address your concerns and reach a mutual resolution. Please contact me at maria_palmisano@uhaul.com and provide me with the name of the lessee listed on the rental agreement and your storage unit number. There may be a simple solution such as getting your credit card information updated in our system to ensure proper monthly storage payments are processed on time. It is only through communication with our customers that we realize which programs are working and which areas need attention, therefore, I hope to hear from you soon.
My husband and I have used Uhaul several times. The trucks have not been available at the time reserved for (and we reserved at least several weeks in advance). The trucks you do get are in poor condition. The one time my husband had to pull on the steering wheel for the entire 5 hr drive b/c it kept veering to the right! We then used a truck from Penske. Wonderful vehicles, in great shape and friendly staff to work with. It was worth having to drive a little bit (30 min) to drop the Penske truck off just b/c of the quality vehicle and professional staff.
Figured my first bad experience with U-Haul was a fluke, so tried them again. Same rude staff, same leaking trucks, same overall aggravating experience. The company business model will not survive over time when this is how you treat the customer.
Never again — PENSKE baby.
I’ve moved across country 3 times with U-Haul and each time was a nightmare, including the auto transport that wiring catching on fire when we were in the mountains of Idaho on our way from Seattle to New York. Then there were the the lights that wouldn’t work or that the truck wouldn’t go faster than 20mph or the auto transport tire that blew out on my friends truck while driving down an incredibly steep down hill high way under heavy construction. I could go on and on. For my current move from NY to FL I’m going to use UPack or Pods and take a nice relaxing train ride with my video camera and a smile.
