I Miss Monopoly

This post probably has very little to do with personal finance but everything to do with the classic game of Monopoly. I was reading Dane’s Business Opportunities blog (specifically this post about an MBA game) when I was sucked in by a gorgeous set of photos on Flickr by R80o of a 1938 (he thinks) copy of Monopoly. When we were on the Bermuda cruise, we had a couple days at sea so we opted to play Monopoly and lose fake money instead of messing around in the casino and lose real money. Below I have a collection of fun links related to Monopoly:

An obligatory link to the history of Monopoly and the heartwarming story of Charles B. Darrow’s creation in the heart of the Great Depression.

Truman Collins went through and calculated all the probabilities related to Monopoly… and it’s insane. This guy wrote a program that takes into account all the Chance/Community Chest cards, methods of getting jailed, etc. so you know that it’s probably as comprehensive as you can get. If you’re a stats-junkie or probability-hound and you like Monopoly, you’ll be in heaven with this site, it’s mind-boggling amazing.

Hasbro’s site also has a bunch of fun links too such as a personality quiz based on the token you use, PDFs to print your own cash, and some “records” like longest game.

If you want to snag your own copy, Amazon carries Monopoly for only nine bucks. Honestly though, I’d prefer to look on Ebay and find an older version.

Finally, if you do play, don’t be a sore loser. Cheers! :)

I LOVE Monopoly. The best thing about living close to family and having so many nieces and nephews is the ready availability of eager board game players. The only draw back to Monopoly is the length of the game. But it is amazing how many folks opt in to play when you set up the board and issue an invitation :)

Also, you can play Monopoly online with others (fairly realistically) at http://www.games.com.

The games can be long, but it largely depends how you play. If you play aggressively, every turn you have an opponent in the game is one turn too long, because the object is to bankrupt people. None of this idle conversation junk — I want to trade, buy, sell, and plot everyone else’s demise. That doesn’t have to take a long time if everyone in the game plays that way and knows what they’re doing.

My games.com ID is mbhunter if anyone wants to play :) — just send an e-mail to info AT mighty-NOSPAM-bargainhunter DoT com.
