Just to let you know that everyone in the UK can get free emergency healthcare in A&E and other departments. If you're studying here for more than 6 months, or you're working here, or you've been legally living here for 12 months, you are entitled to free NHS healthcare (which almost everyone uses for almost everything).

Because of the NHS, I don't have regular health insurance so I'm always taking out travel policies, for an extended stay, and I've often taken out ones from STA Travel - their US branches offer 6 months travel insurance (including medical) for $390.

You may want to check this site out - we have used them in the past for our travel medical insurance, luckily we didn't need it but it's best to have some coverage when you're out of the country as you can be sure blue shield and other us insurers won't be helping you when you're on vacation: https://www.sevencorners.com/insuranceplans/travelmedical/

That's a good point but they don't live together so they didn't qualify. For most plans, domestic partners have to live together for at least a year before they are considered "partners" under those plans.
