There’s a pilot test going on in Washington (the state, not the district) and Oregon where appliances such as dryers and water heaters are pulling electricity rate pricing information off the internet and deciding when to operate. The GridWise Initiative, an organization funded by Congress to prevent blackouts and brownouts, is heading this project and it sounds promising. The appliances will pull power grid load and rate information and operate only at the best (cheapest and low load) times. There are only 200 people taking part in the real-time pilot and hopefully it’ll work out well and be extended into the general population.
