Lee Eisenberg’s The Number

The Number by Lee EisenbergI’ve read the latest personal finance book that’s taken the blogging world by storm, titled The Number by Lee Eisenberg, and I like the book even though it’s very similar to an article Eisenberg penned. I was going to write a review of the book but I felt that all my thoughts were captured by my fellow bloggers who have already written their own reviews. I feel like the guy who has come late to the party (I read slowly and not often) and decides to start conversations people already have finished.

So… to those of you who haven’t had the chance to read a review, here are some that I think you will find both entertaining to read and informative:

  • Consumerism Commentary: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, and also Your New York Number, about an article Mr. Eisenberg wrote that mirrors the book.
  • AllThingsFinancial: JLP has a two part interview with Mr Eisenberg - Part 1 & Part 2.
  • Apparently FMF has a review in the works and it’s not a overly rosy one… keep an eye out for it. (maybe he’s also slow, or maybe he’s too busy watching movies)

Ha! I’m too busy alright — but it’s too busy working on stuff for you!!! ;-)

You should do what I do — ask for an audio copy of the book when you’re asked to review it. You can get through it a lot faster and while you’re doing other things (driving, working out, etc.)

I’ve read it too, and it wasn’t at all what I expected. I’m actually waiting on Lee to e-mail me back on something before I post my own review.

Review: The Number by Lee Eisenberg

Let me start by saying that I love to recommend products by nice people. When I contacted Lee Eisenberg to offer to review his new book, The Number, he responded quickly and was very polite. His publishing company was the

[...] He then goes on to ask the question why the vast majority of people have no plan for their Number. Part 2 of the book discusses the pitfalls that people get into when trying to figure their number. He uses a hypothetical multi-generational family as an example of just how personal the Number is for each person. I thought it was a powerful example. He also explains how unprepared and unorganized the planning industry is in trying to help people understand and plan for their Numbers. Finally, Part 3 brings it all together with a series of chapters on living in retirement (or downshifting as he likes to call it). He believes that in order to successfully understand your Number, you must look beyond numbers and find out what is really important to you. He then introduces the concept of life planning, which in my opinion is a mixture of psychology and financial planning. This book is a gem. I HIGHLY recommend it for EVERYONE to read. I’m sure I’ll be writing more about the issues discussed in the book. After all, I want to help you figure out your Number.
