Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar

2009 Louis Braille Silver Dollar - ProofAfter this morning’s post about cons, I thought I was getting conned when I started reading about the new 2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar because I didn’t hear a single thing about it until today. Made me think of those Obama coins with a sticker on them! (don’t worry, these Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar coins are real)

Today happens to be the first day that the U.S. Mint will be accepting orders for the coin, which is the first coin to have readable Braille on it!

2009 Louis Braille Silver Dollar - Proof

The Obverse was designed by Joel Iskowitz, engraved by Phebe Hemphill, and has an image of Louis Braille, inventor of braille. The reverse was designed by Susan Gamble, engraved by Joseph Menna, and has an image of a child reading a book in Braille including the letter BRL, which is the abbreviation of the word Braille in Braille.

You can buy a proof silver dollar at the Mint for $37.95, which is the promotional price until April 27th. Regular price will be $41.95. They will only produce 400,000 of these coins.

  1. Are they made out of real silver? The readable braille is a great idea! I cannot wait to see one.

    Thanks,
    Nate

  2. Jim says:

They do contain some silver but I can’t find out how much, it’s certainly less than $37.95′s worth of silver though. These are more collectibles than investments.

  3. Jim,
You seem to be on fire today… Cons into Carni-games into Silver Dollars into… I’m laughing to myself trying to guess what topic will be next!
    Keep it rolling!

The real question is whne are they going to kill the penny???

  5. Carla says:

As a coin collector, I wouldn’t mind owning one – I doubt I would order one, but I wouldn’t complain if I got one for a gift. I didn’t know this existed; thanks for the heads up.

  6. Eric says:

What a random day of postings…but I like it! lol.

  7. MissMartha says:

Those look cool! Too bad we won’t see them in the general public with only 400k being minted! If you’re interested in coins, I would highly recommend the US Mint tours. I went to the Denver Mint and really enjoyed the tour! Plus they give you a new quarter during the tour.

Does anyone believe that a mintage of 400,000 will have this coin worth alot more in the future??
