Messing With the Layout
In the next few days I’ll be messing around with the layout and trying to make the site easier to navigate and read. Please excuse the mess and if you see anything out of whack, please let me know by leaving a comment. Firefox users will notice that now the main text pane now expands to the width of your browser instead of being confined… apparently IE doesn’t like the max-width and min-width attributes in the stylesheets so you guys are still stuck.
If you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them. I want to make this site pretty. ![]()

I like the fluid text column. Are you going to try and add a third column?
Hahaha, you run the same thing nickel.
I’m thinking about a third column… it’s a bigger “shock” to the layout than the fluid text columns. I have to figure out what I want to do with it before I add it in.
I’m thinking about chopping the header in half and putting some stuff there - it’s a lot of wasted space. Or I might add some color to this place… everything blue, gray and white.
The max width of 100% is pretty difficult to read large chunks of text for someone who’s monitor’s set to a fairly high rez (ala anything 1280×1024+), but maybe that’s just me. Same for the micro font size you’re using for comments - but again, I’m using a pretty high rez, so it might just be me (and it doesn’t really matter all that much, since firefox will let me jack up the font size to something more comfortable for my not-so-young-anymore eyes - those stuck in IE land are fairly screwed tho, with the fonts being defined in pixels and all, and thus unresizeable).
Been working a bit on a makeover on my site as well (instead of posts to it, apparently), but I’m anal enough that I won’t really consider a switch over until it’s pretty well flawless… good luck with yours!
As for the max width issue, you can always resize the browser right? I’m running 1600×1200 right now so it’s pretty wide for me but I didn’t immediately recognize any issues thus far.
I think I’m going to adjust the micro-font for comments, I didn’t really like it but I also don’t read comments in the typical manner as most readers so I didn’t even think about it (I read them through Wordpress’ admin so I fudge up traffic statistics as little as possible). Thanks for the reminder though.
I don’t seem to know why this happens but when you load up a single post, the main text panel isn’t sized correctly (white background with respect to the gray back-background). But if you resize the page, it paints correctly. Any thoughts?
If you’re worried about messing up your traffic stats, I suggest you try StatCounter. Since SiteMeter can only exclude self-visits based on IP addresses, it doesn’t give accurate stats unless you have a static IP. StatCounter offers cookie-based blocking of visit counts so you can get a much more accurate read on your stats — simply set the cookie and then you can revisit your site as much as you want without it getting coutned. You’ll still throw off the AdSense impression counting, but otherwise it works great.

Again with mega-font… I swear I’m not doing anything to trigger it.

It’s because of the pair of double dashes you put between your comment and your link, it makes the text above it enormous - probably a equix “feature.”
Oh, and with regard to your stats, I wasn’t so much conerned about sitemeter or bbclone (http://www.bargaineering.com/bbclone), but I have snippets of SQL code that upgrade a hit counter for each post so I know how many views each one has received. This was before those plugins came out and so I’ve just kept my own stuff and kept hacking away at it.
