Mona Vie Scam? The Magical Acai Berry Juice Product

Mona Vie. One of my friend’s wife was targeted to join Mona Vie. I’ve seen a lot of references to both Mona Vie and one of the components in its mixture, açaí, but never really looked into it. I knew that it smelled fishy, in part because its a classic multi-level marketing program, and that alone gives me reason to pause. However, I wanted to take an objective look at it, since there are a lot of MLMs out there and they can’t all be bad right?
Multi-Level Marketing / Pyramid Schemes
Only two words are needed to describe Mona Vie, the brand name of the juice: pyramid scheme. Mona Vie is a “standard multi-level marketing program,” commonly referred to as a pyramid scheme, that relies on people marketing their products. Every time you make a sale, you earn a commission. The people who recruited you, and the people who recruited that person (your “upline”) into the program will also earn a commission. If you recruit someone into the program (your “downline”), you will earn a commission on their sales. The classic pyramid scheme.
There’s is nothing inherently illegal or disreputable about multi-level marketing programs. They aren’t illegal in the sense that Ponzi Schemes are illegal , it’s just that most implementations of MLM programs only really benefit the people at the top of the pyramid. This is because many of these programs have quotas that members need to sell and, when they can’t, members often find themselves buying the products themselves just to meet quota. Anyway, enough with the generalities, what’s specifically scammy about Mona Vie?
Mona Vie Scam?
What’s this Açaí berry juice product? It’s supposed to jump all over the antioxidant health craze people have been clamoring all over and Açaí berries are a very good source of antioxidants (most dark colored berries are, like blackberries, raspberries, etc.); that part is legitimate. The drink itself is 19 juices blended together.
There are two parts of Mona Vie that are suspect. First, many agree that antioxidants are beneficial for you but Mona Vie makes some big promises such as improving cardiovascular health, improving joint function, etc. It claims that it can cure many ailments because it contains components that have been shown to address some of them. Nothing they say is a flat-out lie but it’s like saying you can do laps in a kiddie pool. Possible? Yes. Probable? Not really.
The second part that’s suspect is the fact that the stuff is $30-$40 a ~26 oz. bottle and proponents say you have to drink 2 oz. in the morning and 1 oz. in the evening. Simple math shows that each month you’ll have to spend $120-$170 on the juice, or $1,500-$2,000 a year. If you want the benefits of these types of juices, you can get it for much much less. Oh, and any distributor has to buy 4 bottles a month. Sure you can sell them, but what if you don’t? You’re always on the hook.
Other red flags? Their CEO and founder, Dallin Larsen, is a 20 year veteran of the MLM industry and the FDA recently shut down a similar juice product operation, Dynamic Essentials distributed Royal Tongan Limu juice, for illegal business practices. Hmmm…
Finally, check out the MonaVie compensation plan, courtesy of The Fraud Files blog. There are all sorts of crazy exceptions and rules. For example, you have two legs on your “downline,” but are only paid on commissions based on the shorter of the two. It gets really complicated, really quickly, and that certainly doesn’t bode well for people who sell the stuff.
The bottom line is that you’re overpaying for a product and, if you’re a distributor, you have to buy 4 bottles a month. Do you think it’s a scam? (this site, Purple Horror, documents a lot of Mona Vie’s shenanigans)

If you are looking to drink some antioxidants go buy Kosher grape juice or some high quality dark berry juice. It will be about $5 a bottle instead of $35 and carries the same amount of quality antioxidants. Partner that with some Green Tea and a good quality multivitamin and you will spend about $12 a month or $144 dollars a year for antioxidants instead of $1500.
The Kosher grape juice doesn’t contain the acai berry you idiot. Mona Vie has the harvestaion of the acai berry patented where they freeze-dry it within 24 hours in order to preserve 90% of its nutritional content. This is why it costs a little more because you’re getting what you’re paying for. Anything else that you take in the world won’t have near the nutritional value as this drink…..Mona Vie made $1.4 BILLION in the 4th year of existence…faster than any other company in History. Microsoft made $1B after 7 years. The people that are negative about Mona Vie are the people that are too lazy or too scared to talk to people about it. I feel what Mona Vie does for my body so I’m sharing that with people. If you’re too stubborn to try it then that’s your problem…….oh, by the way, I’ve been in Mona Vie for 27 days and I’m making $50/week already! Some scam huh?
Notice how Allen feels the need to condemn the other person to make his point by calling him an idiot. This is very unprofessional! “Too lazy, scared or stubborn”? I would say these people are cautious, because the people promoting Mona Vie are coming accross as snake oil salesmen! And consider the founder of Mona Vie, Dallin Larsen, who was involved with a company called Dynamic Essentials, which was shut down by the FDA for illegal business practices! Sounds to me like just another Mormon scam!!!
Wendy, it sounds like you have a bone to pick with the company. Have you been involved in MV at all or are you just making statements from things you have heard?
As I have mentioned before, being rude, nasty or judgemental will not solve anything. Saying this is a Mormon scam is brutal at best. We are not supposed to pass judgement on anyone, lest our faults be judged just as harshly.
So, what is your true purpose here? Are you trying to really help people or just pick a fight?
Do any of you actually have any kind of common sense? If this product is truly as good as people are claiming then it will end up in stores and you won’t have to go through a door to door salesman!
Hey Allen!!! You forgot to tell everyone how much money you are required to spend to make that much money. To be a distributor you have to buy a minimum every month. The key to there success is the motivational speaking that goes along with the sellers of the product. Mona-Vie Active is for joint health. It contains glucosamine. Its like $65 dollars at the distributor price if I recall. Wal-Mart sell a pill called “Joint Fuel”. It contains glucosamine and condroiden with MSN. This is much better and it only costs you around $12 dollars a bottle (lasts around 1 to 2 months). Its pretty much like a pyramid scam. It targets weak minded people and people who know how to exploit them. The exploiters see a golden opportunity to make money off weak minded people.
And by the way, I tried one of there natural energy drinks (cause it was free), and I felt absolutely nothing. I was still tired and yawning. I drank a mountain dew and I finally woke up. People please approach this product with a very open mind. Dont fall into the hype and get dragged down into a mental hole.

Hey, good for you… my family has been on mona vie for like… 5 months now, and it has done WONDERS for our joint pains and health problems, and for all our friends who had horrible health problems… and my parents recently went Gold this week… we’re making 400 bucks just cause our downline is selling stuff! Yep… this is a TOTAL scam… improving your health problems naturally, and earning money, doing nothing but telling other people about the product and helping them. People like this make me so mad… X(
I have to point out to anyone who likes natural fruit/veg juice to help keep their fruit and vegetable instake up to try Arthur’s Smoothies. They are pretty expensive at about $2.50 a piece, but you can get a variety of them and ‘drink from the rainbow’ to keep your taste buds content and body running properly.
Drink water regularly, and 1 real fruit smoothy a day (any brand, real fruit no additions), for 30 days, you’ll be surprised at how much better you’ll feel.
I wouldn’t buy that kind (too expensive and scammy), but I did drink this stuff daily while dealing with cancer. Both my oncologist and my GP recommended drinking it every day – which is rare because doctors mostly just want to give you prescriptions and nothing natural at all.

Why is it scammy? People that say this are too lazy, or don’t have the balls to talk to people about it because they have no drive or passion about anything….I’ve been in Mona Vie for 26 days and I’ve already received my “Mona Visa” pre-funded credit card and I’m receiving $50/week. Some scam, huh?
Just because you recieve some money up front, does not mean that it’s not a scam. Have you taken a look at their binary structure? You are only paid, based on your shorter leg! This means that if you have one leg producing $20k per month, but the other leg is only producing $1k, you will only be paid based on the lesser leg! That sounds like a scam to me!!!
MonaVies new generation binary is non flushing, also its not 20k & 1k its 20,000 pv & 1000 pv. if you had this volume you would be paid $100.00 commission. It’s non flushing so your one leg would still have 19,000 pv credited forever until paid. If your leg that had 1000 pv has 19,000 pv next week and your other leg that has 19,000 pv in credit does nothing you get $1,900 in commission. This is unheard of in MLM and it’s no scam, but there are a lot of poor sceptics that are losing daily knocking a good thing.

Did your Oncologist sign you up for the program after he recomended you to drink it? I’m gonna go ahead and guess he did. The son of a bitch probably takes advantage of everyone of his patients. This is illegal being he is a position of authority. All of the ingredients in this drink can be purchased at fractions of the cost.
I find it hard to believe that an oncologist would recommend Monavie to one of their patients; it’s hard to imagine that they would have even heard of it. If it is true, they were almost certainly profiting from it somehow. No MD in their right mind would recommend it otherwise.
I originally though the very same way. Until I saw a bottle on my friends counter and asked him where he got it. He told me his doctor gave him a choice of drugs or juice for the swelling in his knee. I was shocked! After a week Shawn said he was able to go up and down the stairs without pain. I played pro baseball for 7 years and caught everyday and games or bullpens. I’ve already had surgery on my right knee. So I started drinking the juice. The best part of the whole story is I am a network marketer that was looking for the next company. This doctor approached Shawn and I afterwards and asked for our help. He has so many patients drinking the juice that he needed someone to manage it. So we stepped in and are building it with the help of a doctor. Now just wait for the flood of MonaVia resellers posting comments about the amazing heath benefits of drinking their juice.
Be very careful there. MonaVie doesn’t make those health claims. If they did they could get sued. Their distributors make those claims. The smarter ones are careful to say that they have experienced less joint plan themselves and not directly relating it to the juice. This is not considered a medical claim of the product, but just someone giving out information about their lives.
Note: Distributors represent the company and this means that the claims they make could cause them and the company to be sued, if these claims are not backed up with scientific evidence! This is called DECEPTION, but then again, this is what Mormons do!

I am a vascular surgeon and an experienced cardiovascular researcher. I have been taking MonaVie for about two months. I am not a distributor. The best I can say (along with my other vascular surgery colleagues on the stuff) is that it lowers your appetite and increases your overall energy level. One pregnant colleague stopped taking it as she essentially never felt tired and never slept when on it.
The effect does NOT appear to the sympathomimetic (like an amphetamine or nicotine) as I note no change is resting or exercise-induced heart rate. Most doctors are recommending an increase in antioxidant intake, particularly in the raw form (i.e. fruits and vegetables rather than vitamin pills). You decide for yourself whether Mona VIe is in the raw form (it is a jiuce puree) or not.
My advice is to try one to two bottles (about 2-4 weeks supply at 30 mL/dose twice daily) and decide for yourself. It does not have tobe the Mona Vie brand, but other sources of acai are not much cheaper. I do not believe that acai is a substitute for exercise or a healthy diet, but there are definite antioxidant effects (see above article) of the stuff, so don’t discount it as snake oil, because scientific investigation shows that it is not.

Haha, I’m not an acai competitor.
What is with this site?? I have had nothing but positive results with Monavie and the sa,e for those I know taking it. My father and most of my family are distributors. The reason a distributor purchases 4 bottles a month is because four bottles only last a month (1 bottle per week per person). To observe maximum results this it is recommended that you take 2 oz’s in the morning and 2 in the evening. And as for it being a scheme, it is not. When a distributor places a person underneath them that person that is underneath them has the ability to pass-up the person who signed he or she up by having a stronger lesser leg than the lesser leg of the person who signed he or she up. There is no scheme at all. And the purpose of the company is not to make money it’s to make people healthy. Just think about it, how many servings of organic hearty fruits and veggies do you eat a day. Most likely hardly a few. Monavie provides you with the needed servings per day and then some. The juice/puree is nothing but whole organic fruit that has been ground down and pureed with the benefit of an excellent super food, acai. You can tell by looking at the juice that all of the good stuff is still in it unlike that stuff you buy at the store. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this juice or this company.

This is honestly the most naive statement I’ve ever heard. Of course the purpose of the company is to make money… that’s what companies do. I actually attended one of their “Tasting Parties” (advertisement presentation basically) just a couple days ago, and basically all they talked about was money. Sure they mentioned the “awesome health benefits” but after that it was all about how you could recruit people under you and make money from their sales, and if you sell enough they’ll “reward” you with a car, or a plane, or even a trip into space! I’m completely serious about that one.
But if all they cared about was people’s health, then they would just give the juice away, not sell it at a ridiculous $40 a bottle.
Alright, MLM is just a fancy name for a scheme! Mr. Larsen had a different juice that was shut down by the FDA! Hes a liar. And you are brainwashed! Mpnavie acts like a cult. Either your with them or your against them. Im against them.
All multilevel companies have a cult like brainwashing involved in them. Be realistic. There is a sucker born every minute. Wake up and smell the coffee people. Don’t let the economic downturn make you so desperate that you just piss away whatever you may have left. Sorry, if you feel this is harsh but sometimes the truth is hard to swallow. We all want to be rich. The only proven way to get there is through hard honest work.
MonaVies new generation binary, non flushing, is the best in MLM history. Truly the man at the bottom can make more than the man at the top if the man at the bottom has a bigger lesser leg than the man at the top. I am almost a star 1000 and I started months ago, why are you not a MonaVie customer/ distributor yet?

A RCT with an n=12 is not worth the paper it’s printed on. I’m a physician too, so you should know off the bat with 12 subjects the study is garbage. Who has ever heard of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry? Probably just one of those journals no one reads but people can say they’re “published” to boost their resume’s.

Opinion is Opinion. Facts are Facts. I have been using Vitamins and Omega 3′s for over 21 years. If I stopped using my products, I could feel it the next day. I am picking up 9 bottles of Mona vie on Tuesday and will try the juice. If it is pure Juice…which I think it is..then I will feel it and probably recomment it. The fact that a business plan is attached to it, is brillant. I have also been a trainer and I have also had my share of Junk food. Anything that has health benefits is good. I think Mona vie will also.
We shall see.

Are you trying to tell me that as a doctor you have nothing better to do on a Saturday then to bitch about a fruit drink that people are taking to assist them with health issues? I am glad you are not my doc. I would expect that my doctor would be more of an advocate towards a healthy lifestyle. Do us all a favor and blog on cigarette ads or caffeine distributors, don’t knock on a product that is changing individual lives.
PS. You know you are getting a lot of intake of sugar in your all natural store bought drinks? Probably NOT…

There are two industries here. The Health Industry which only makes money if you are healthy by their products. And the Sickness Industry, which only makes money if your sick. Make everyone healthy and the sickness industry goes belly up, doctors treat symptoms like pain etc with pills, MonaVie gives the body nutrients that the body uses to better it’s health. better health is the root of lesser pain, not covering the problem with a pain killer which as we know is addictive and destructive.
I looked at this link and it stated that it lowered some of the symtoms by (p < 0.001) and (p < 0.003). This does NOT sound very impressive to me! Remember that this "study" was done with healthy people, NOT people with cancer or any other health problems! Where is the scientific proof that is significant???
actually wendy, I have seen miracles done with this product… a friend of ours had fibryomyalgia and was on over 40 meds, she took monavie for a couple of weeks, and she is only on about 4 of those meds now… and she is pain free! my family has been on monavie for 5 months now, and the joint pain I had in my knees, and my dad’s shoulder is absolutely gone… and for a year my dad rarely ever slept at night… maybe a couple times. It is so sad when people won’t try something that might work. My daughter has given bottles of Monavie away to strangers and friends just because she wants to help people. She does not sell Monavie. But she had an incredible story about her discovery of it, her little boy’s recovery from a digestive problem, and guess what? Dear mom (me) tried it and my arthritis (too many injuries over the years) pain nearly disapeared. After taking it for over a year, I let my auto-ship lapse one month and gradually, my knee, hip and neck pain came back. I won’t let it happen again! My “great” toe is so bad that I was slated for surgery. With Monavie I don’t even need pain pills. The anti-inflamatory meds were causing stomach damage. I am so glad to be off of them!
Grape juice can’t do that, Kosher or non-kosher! Pomegranate doesn’t work either! And I have also tested other acai preparations. They are all a waste of money, not grown or harvested in the same way.
If you do try it, take it for more than a month. I would say 6-8 weeks. It takes awhile to work through your system, to begin to heal you on a cellular level.

Yes, it is sad when people are sold a bill of goods for a very high price, when they could buy essentially the same thing for a much lower price! It is obvious that most of the money Mona Vie charges for their product goes into the pockets of the owners of the company! The quality is really not much different than juice you can buy from a health food store, but the price is much higher! Do your research people!

If after reading the testimonials to this point, and you say show me the proof, look outside and see proof of a sky, look up and see proof of the stars, hello how much proof do you need? my back was hurting me to the point I almost lost my job. out of pure hope and faith I drank two cases of this stuff called MonaVie Active, I do not say it was or was not the juice that healed me, but my back is 100% better and now I am sold for life.

We only tried it after hearing good things from friends and saw amazing results in family members. Now I have energy, my joints are fantastic (I had hip, knee and foot injuries as well as a neck injury) and I forgot that my hot flashes are almost nil, it heals on a cellular level. I have tasted the Mona Vie juice Alex and I don’t like it. More than that though, is the fact that the distributors I met were very pushy and unprofessional. What if a doctor prescribed MonaVie to a patient, that was dying and there was no hope of a cure, and there was a small chance it would work. but the patient took one sip and said I don’t like it and stopped taking MonaVie and died. A lot of children say they do not like vegetables, but that does not make them bad for you, just because someone does not like something doesn’t make it bad. Stop whinning and start eating right or you will surely die from disease, amen.
Then that doctor would loose their practice for “prescribing” something to a patient that does not have FDA approval to be sold, advertised, or marketed as a drug, or cure.

Ive been approached with monavie with claims to cure certain sickness or help prevent certain diseases.
Its an antioxidant, and it can help ur immune system, but it can also work as a placebo.

Monavie in my opinion is not expensive. One bottle lasts me more than 2 weeks. One bottle costs me $25 when I get it on drop ship.
When I was taking prescriptions for my arthritis and other problems due to injuries (knee, hip and neck problems) They ran me over $45 per month. But even worse, they didn’t work and had terrible side effects.
I was nearly hospitalized from the extreme stomach pain from Etodolac. I thought I had cancer. After over a thousand dollars worth of tests, found nothing was wrong, just that something was causing terrible stomach pain. I stopped the Etodolac and the pain finally diminished.
With Monavie, I have almost no pain. My doctor is very excited about it. He had me write down information regarding Monavie , documenting my use and is trying it himself.

Hey, JR take a look at the back of that bottle of fruit a vie at costco. See the first ingredient listed there? It says water doesn’t it. So you’re paying 17 bucks a bottle for something that the primary ingredient is water.
The primary ingredient on the back of mona vie is acai. The FDA mandates that the main ingredient in any food item must be listed first.

Been a Monavie distributor for a year and a half. I only buy it for me. I have severe arthritis, fibromyalgia, restless leg syndrome and depression.
Have been drinking 2 to 3 oz twice a day since I became a distributor. All of my afflictions have gotten worse since starting this product. I have noticed one interesting thing and that is my hair is growing faster and fuller, but I also stopped coloring it so don’t know which is which. I am a RN and was open minded starting this product, as of now I’m going to cancel this Mormon juice and go to Costco and save the rest of the money.

I’m sorry your health has gotten worse since you began using this product. Have you seen your doctor about this? There may be something in this product that your body negatively reacts to. Everyone is different. No product is a cure-all and certainly not for everyone.
I cannot understand how anyone could spend $143.00 per month on a one case autoship, never share it with anyone but onesself, say they haven’t gotten any results from things that countless people confess being helped by MonaVie, and then insult a group of people that claim their love of God, and think anyone is dumb enough to believe them?

Dear Jen, thanks for the thoughts re: my health. I think what I meant to say or should have said, is that all the ailments I was told the juice would help, didn’t and I also noticed that my particular symptoms became worse. They aren’t necessarily related, but I am disappointed that at least something did not observably improve. BTW has anyone noticed small awful looking lumps of something odd in their juice? I am assuming that it is the omega’s or something, but it looks so bad that I don’t feel I can sell the products at 40 bucks a pop with this in it. Thanks, Faure
I’m sorry if you were misled by a Monavie representative. They should not make any health claims. What it should come down to is fuit is good for your body and in testing the acai berry has shown to be a good fruit to consume. There are many testimonials, but everyone is different. As for the lumps… The juice should have a year shelf life if closed and a month in the fridge. There are some things in the juice, but it is just part of the fruit.

My daughter learned about MonaVie when she lived in CA, where it is more widely used, and where there are numerous meetings of distributors. She heard many, many testimonials. When she had to move back to CO due to her husband’s job, she thought it would take off here as well. But the economy has affected that. She gave many bottles away to people who were in poor health, but in most cases they didn’t try it, thinking she was trying to push it on them. She wasn’t it. She would have liked to add to her group, but she is a caring person who has found a wonderful product, and has seen amazing results, such as mine, her ex-MIL’s, her baby’s, of course, and and her ex’s family! These are people with sports injuries or arthritis and diabetes.
I wish we knew how to present Monavie to seriously ill people. It is too bad that people are so skeptical. If I had a disease that was potentially terminal, I would try anything. My daughter quit selling Monavie, for now, until the economy picks up, she probably gave away $2000 worth of it.

Multi level marketing is now called Intelectual distribution and is now taught at Harvard University. intelectual distribution is a perfect way to market a product, and in case studies has proven that products in an intelectual distribution company are far more superior to retail products.
The reason for this is it is extremely expensive to retail a product, as retail stores are expensive warehouses of products. in a multi level market there are fewer middlemen from the manufactures to the customer. and the advertising cost is zero as it is spread by word of mouth the best form of advertisement. and yes MonaVie is currently sold retail in some health stores. But why buy it retail when you can become a member for free all of 2009 and get it for wholesale.

I lost my grandson to what is called Tay-Sachs going on 5 years ago. There is No Cure and it’s very sad to see a 2 year pass away. Wish MonaVie was around then for they can’t eat any longer as well. Well, all I can say is that my neighbor introduced me to the monavie product and I tried it and liked it. I don’t need those vitamin pills anymore and have much more energy. I wanted my mother to try it because she has so many health problems, MS, high blood presure, ect ect. After one week of use she didn’t have to use her walker anymore and she looks and feels 10 yrs younger. Thats my proof of the product!!!

I have to say Mona vie is the same product that’s been sold for years on end now. It’s the latest unheard of berry or fruit that has great antioxidant properties. Mona Vie DOES WORK because it supplies your body with a HUGE amount of antioxidants, which most people severely lack in their diets. If you examine the other cultures that these berries come from and look into their dietary habits, you’ll see that they eat better than us in general and that’s why they are healthier. If you want something that will work even BETTER THAN MONA VIE, buy fresh blackberries and blueberries, any berry really, and eat lots of fruits and veggies everyday, most aches and pains will disappear as your body’s immune system naturally fights them.
Please tell people that blueberries and just about any berry on earth cannot be compared to the acai berry. One gram of MonaVie acai freezed dried powder has 1027 antioxident units. You know nothing about Monavie (like all of the other negative posters) and you know nothing about the people who have had positive results….you certainly have no basis in fact or science. My son and I have a background in biology and did a lot of research before we tried MonaVie. But it was mainly the results of my daughter that pushed me to try it. I know her, her history and her honesty. Anyway, we understand why acai works, but only if it grown properly and that it is not the same as blackberries, or pomagranate (which is closer to the same antioxident levels) or any of the other fruits that are not available in the US that are very healthful. My sister’s DIL from Indonesia tells us of very healthy fruits there. But even those fruits do not have the properties of the acai berry. I’m sure there are other berries that have similar properties, but the fact is that Monavie works for us, and that the people who are disparaging about it are almost all, without a doubt, the sellers of the other “acai” products which are like freeze-dried versions. Try testing fresh organic oprange juice against canned orange juice (eeew). Completely different. Also, you know nothing about sports injuries and arthritis. No matter how much fruit and vegetables I eat (and I eat a lot, always have)

I have noticed that a lot more people in CO are showing an interest. It’s mainly word of mouth. People were put off by the price, but when they see their friends or family feeling better, they realize that it is less than the price of pharmaceuticals (money cost and side-effect cost) as we did.
And as for giving back, its a good thing and is always returned.
I better question is what is so special about Monovie. I’d much rather eat my recommended servings of fruits and vegetables and a variety of both than pay $40 for a bottle that barely lasts 2 weeks for one person. The key is good nutrition. There is no magic drink or pill that can replace good nutrition and there never will be. I work with a couple distributors of Monovie who swear by this stuff. And they are sincere, but proper nutrition by eating raw whole foods is cheaper and healthier than relying on a stupid beverage. Sorry, but nothing in liquid form can compete with the natural whole version of the food. To each their own, I guess…
