New Lincoln Penny Features Four Rear Designs
The U.S. Mint announced the four designs of the new penny to debut next year on Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, February 12th. They will be rolled out in three month intervals, starting Feb. 12th, with a Lincoln commemorative silver dollar released in 2009 as well. It’ll be the first time in fifty years that the penny will have changed and each of the four rear designs will show milestones in his life:

We don’t need a new penny. We need to stop making pennies, because they are too costly, not only in their face-value to material-value ratio (which is less than 1) but also in their value to time-spent-handling-them ratio. I refuse to carry nickels or pennies.
It’s time to get rid of the cent piece… I was hoping the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent would lead to retirement of the coin.
We agree with Flexo and Glenn. Pennies have only added to our woes.

I’ve heard of head and tails, obverse and reverse, but I’ve never heard of rear designs before.
It’s my own classy name
I rather liked the original reverse, didn’t like the Lincoln Memorial reverse, and have long wanted an entirely new design, but I like these reverses.
Then in 2010, let’s try something completely different.
How about getting rid of the cent and bringing back the two-cent (1864-1873) coin?
“In God We Trust” was first put on coins in the Civil War but didn’t make it onto all coins until 1955.
Um, what coin(s) did not have “In God We Trust” in 1954, or 1944?
I agree with the first few commenters– what a big dumb waste of time! We should be getting rid of pennies, not designing new ones!
I think both the penny and nickel should be dropped and prices displayed with only one decimal place (unless the transactions are electronic).
