Make Your Own Onion Soup Mix and Italian Dressing at Home

Most of us are conditioned thanks to advertising firms’ marketing to buy already prepared mixes that we can make at home for a fraction of the cost. Our family has recently explored creating some convenience items that we can easily make at home including Onion Dry Soup Mix and Italian Salad Dressing.
When I was growing up, a staple in our home was Lipton Onion Dry Soup Mix. My mom used this for making dips and to sprinkle on our roasts for flavor. However, Lipton Onion Soup Mix is not cheap at about $1.60 a box, especially when you consider you can easily put together your own onion dry soup mix using ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.
In addition to saving yourself a little bit of money, you also avoid unsavory ingredients such as MSG, hydrolized soy protein and disodium inosinate.
This is a recipe I originally found on Heavenly Homemakers (a great source for natural recipes); best of all, I notice no difference from the “real” Lipton Onion Dry Soup Mix.
Onion Dry Soup Mix
- 2/3 cup dried, minced onion
- 3 teaspoons parsley flakes
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 2 teaspoons turmeric
- 1 teaspoon celery salt
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
Mix all ingredients in an airtight container, then give it a good shake.
Use 4 Tablespoons Onion Soup Mix in a recipe in place of 1 packet of onion soup mix. Store this in a dry, cool place.
I primarily use this sprinkled on our stews and roasts that I cook in the slow cooker. However, you could also mix it with sour cream for a chip or veggie dip. Another option is to mix it with ground beef to cook up flavorful hamburgers.
Besides saving money and having more natural, healthy ingredients, homemade condiments, sauces, and mixes are also great for those who have allergies or intolerances. My daughter cannot eat soy, and we were suprised to learn that soybean oil is in many salad dressings.
Instead, we turned to making our own using this recipe (also thanks to Heavenly Homemakers):
Italian Dressing Mix
- 1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 Tablespoon onion powder
- 2 teaspoon oregano
- 1 Tablespoon dried parsley
- 2 teaspoons sea salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon dried celery flakes
Shake ingredients together and store in a jar.
To make Italian salad dressing: Mix 2 Tablespoons dry mix with 1/4 cup vinegar, 2 teaspoons water and 1/2 cup olive oil.
I sprinkle this dry on my roasts and stews for a change of pace. It is also delicious prepared as Italian salad dressing and poured on chicken breasts that are then baked in the oven. Yum.
What condiments or mixes do you make at home? Which ones would you like to learn to make?

It would be fun to make these but not worth the hassle.
I believe it’s worth the hassle because the mixes I make at home have no chemicals in them; i.e. I know what the ingredients are. Plus, it’s cheaper. It only takes minutes (less than 5) each time you make the mix, so it’s not like you’ve been hours for a “hassle”.
I had never really thought of this. Good idea.
Thank you bunches for the dry onion soup recipe! We use a lot of it in crockpot cooking.
The really nice thing about both these recipes is that we can reduce the salt (sodium) content for those of us on such diets.
The dry onion soup mix is a great find for me. I live in a country that does not have it but unfortunately many of my recipes call for it. So now I can once again make my old favorites.
These are both tasty and as Holly mentioned, good for reducing sodium content. For others who can’t have milk or soy, making your own is a great way to go.
I make poor man’s Russian dressing for salads.
I mix Miracle Whip, Catsup and Pickle Relish and voila! Works for me. I will try the onion soup mix as you noted it has become very costly.
I love to oven fry potatoes with the onion soup mix but I never seem to have a packet when I have the potatoes; this will be a perfect replacement! Thanks!
My family likes this.
