Your Take: Restaurant Week!

DessertToday marks the first day of Baltimore’s Restaurant Week (and the second week of Howard County’s Farm 2 Table Restaurant Week), and an opportunity for diners to try out nice restaurants at a discount price. I didn’t know the history of Restaurant Week (that it was started by Joe Baum and Tim Zagat in 1992 in NYC) but I’m glad the idea caught on and expanded!

If you don’t know what this is, Restaurant Week is where restaurants offer a fixed price menu at a discount. Do a search of restaurant week and your city or county to see if there’s one going on near you. Every year, we try to make it out to one new restaurant during the week in order to try something new. There are plenty of restaurants out there and being able to dine at a discount is a great way to see if we like a place without committing too much money. We also tend to visit an old favorite or two simply because the prices are often very good.

We’ve had good experiences and bad experiences (at one steakhouse, the meal took almost three hours and my dessert of a cheesecake came out half melted) but overall we’ve been pleased to be introduced to some fine restaurants. It makes for a nice date night!

    I love restaurant week. I try to make it to at least two lunches and one dinner each time here in Boston.

    To be able to eat a 3-course meal at a fine dining establishment for such a great price is awesome.

    It’s a great way to try something different without spending $30+ on the entree alone. And as you mentioned, I like to go back to some favorites, too.

    We love restaurant week! It gives us a chance to try out a place we aren’t sure about at lesser prices.

    Some tips:
    Good places fill up fast, look at the list of participants immediately after they are published and make reservations soon.
    Going earlier can make for a better experience, peak hours tend to be more rushed and crowded.
    Service is usually more harried, cut them a bit of a break and plan on a longer meal, even more than the restaurnt’s usual timing.
    Substitutions are harder and more likely to be messed up, try and pick places you can eat at with no issues.
    Check the menu carefully, some have an up charge added to certain items that are in addition to the restaurant week price

    I try to do at least one Restaurant Week each year, over here they do them twice a year. If your looking to get your moneys worth either go Steakhouse or Seafood. The price is reasonable for more expensive places, but some restaurants actually get pricier, so watch out for that.

  5. I like Restaurant Week because I’d probably never pay normal prices to go to those restaurants but will check it out during Restaurant week.
