Snag Post-Holiday Goodies Cheap!

Huge after-Christmas SalesI love the week after Christmas but before New Years because the sales are all going to be bananas, especially this year. Stores realize that all their holiday inventory isn’t even worth the shipping costs of sending it back to the warehouse. That fact is the very reason why you should go out to your local bookstore to pick up boxes of seasons greetings cards and other decorations on the cheap.

The key to getting a good on anything is to buy it when retailers want to get rid of it. Right now, they want to shed their inventory of holiday themed products. There is absolutely no value in holiday cards and lights right now! Last year we walked into a bookstore and picked up boxes of holiday cards for a dollar a piece. We didn’t need Christmas cards, the store was looking to offload them, so we bought a bunch of cute cards that normally would’ve cost us at least five times more. The best part about it is that this year we’re almost guaranteed not to send the same card as someone else. :)

In years past, we’ve always used this time to supplement our ornament collection. The first year we had a tree, we didn’t have many ornaments but we made it work with more lights. Then, right after Christmas, we headed towards our local Macy’s and picked up a bunch of boxes on deep discount. Nowadays, we get a lot of ornaments from our family, so it’s not something we’ll be doing this year, but now is a great time to pick up boxes of simple ornaments on the cheap.

In addition to holiday themed goods, retailers are, in general, offering crazy sales to try to drum up business. While the holiday retail sales figures aren’t released yet, stores probably expect them to be low given the economy and the huge snowstorm that hit the east two weekends ago. With that hanging over their heads, they’re cutting prices and trying to get people out to the stores to spend. If there are things you wanted, now’s the time to try to snag them on the cheap (except for appliances, you should find out your state’s cash for appliances program schedule!)

Anyone pick up any good post-holiday goodies already?

  1. Yep. Women walking out of Walmarts with carts full of wrapping paper and ornaments at 50% off. I’m waiting a little longer for 75% off though!

“cash for appliances” seems interesting..very similar to the “cash for clunkers” program, huh.

You can use this strategy year round for every major holiday!

This is when I go and buy tons of toys for toy drives and less fortunate kids for the next year. I buy as much as I can and am glad to see that my money goes farther than it would have.

This is when I go and buy tons of toys for the toy drives the following year. I buy as much as I can. I like to know that my dollar goes farther than it would have.

I snagged several strands of lights for our tree next year at half off today. One of our cats chewed through a strand of lights so we needed some replacements.

Already stocked up on Christmas cards and lights. Now I am ready for next year.

  9. Izalot says:

I agree get your holiday stuff…But wait for the 75% off.

I usually do wait for 75% off, unless there is a particular item I really want. If that is the case you are better off to go the day after and buy it at 50%, otherwise it may be gone. That is what I did this year. I had my eye on some cone trees at Pier 1. So I got there at 10 after 8 and the parking lot was already slam full! And this is a Pier 1 that is usually DEAD. I was shocked. I got what I went for and got out. It was crazy. I felt like there were more people out the day after Christmas than there was leading up to it.

I picked up my usual after-Christmas items at Target yesterday for 75% off – any wrapping paper, tissue paper, gift tags, cards, and gift bags that I will need for next year. I have always had luck finding enough at 75% off to get me through the next holiday season. If I find a great deal on toys, I will usually pick some up for next year’s Toys for Tots donations as well.

Electronics are also being ‘priced down’ at this point. Prepping for inventory…

It’s always a good strategy to think ahead. I just picked up some wrapping paper – which was an even better deal for me because it wasn’t overtly Christmas-themed, so I can use it anytime.

It’s great for any seasonal items – swimsuits in the winter, coats and gloves in the summer, etc.

Usually I don’t go shopping at this point (shopped out!) but this year I picked up some stuff.

  15. Wilma says:

Looking forward to the cash for clunkers appliance rebates. Very curious as to how good the deals going along with those rebates will be as I need a washer for sure and maybe a fridge.

I’m a huge fan of stocking up after the holidays. I know I’ll need more lights next year because trees grow or strands burn out, but this year every store around me had trouble keeping them in stock during the regular season. This meant there were no post Christmas sales to be had. I also was looking for a taller tree. I bought my last one at Wal-Mart a few years ago for $15 bucks in mid January. This year there was nothing left on Dec 27th.

A lot of holiday items can be used for other holidays.
    For Example:
Napkins: Red, Green, White, Gold ect… can be used for other Holidays like Valentines Day, St Patrick’s Day, or even for weddings and birthday parties.
Lights: =-same holiday idea and parties, outdoor ones can be used to decorate the patio or garden area.
Also a good buy is craft kits & supplies can be used year round and not necessarily as the manufacture intended,
I use the metallic Chenille stems to clean out the reusable straws I get with my Six Flags bottle. They can also be used for decorating mums for HOmecoming and the battery operated light sets can be used with train layouts, doll houses
    THe sky is the limit!
