Southwest is easily one of my favorite airlines and so far even that allegiance hasn’t pushed me to sign up for their credit card. This latest offer might change my mind though because this latest promotional offer for the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card is worth nearly $800 in Wanna Get Away Fares (that’s their cheapest option fares when you book online). $800 can get me almost five flights between Baltimore Washington International (BWI) and my parent’s house on Long Island (ISP).

The deal is this, apply for the card and then spend $2,000 in the first three months to receive 50,000 bonus points worth $800 in Wanna Get Away? fares. There is a $99 annual fee that is not waived for the first year, so you effectively get $701 in Wanna Get Away? fares but each year you renew you get 6,000 bonus points. Those points are worth $100 in fares so it’s a wash if you fly on Southwest (which would be the primary reason to get this card anyway).

Southwest Airlines® Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit CardOther perks include 2 points per $1 spent on Southwest and AirTran purchases and 1 point per $1 spent on everything else. If you fly a lot, you’ll also appreciate that you get 1,500 Tier Qualifying Points for every $10,000 in purchases towards A-List, with a maximum of 15,000 Tier Qualifying Points. You can get A-List status by flying 25 one-way qualifying flights a year (basically a little over one roundtrip a month) or 35,000 Tier Qualifying Points a year. A-List gets you a bunch of perks like free wi-fi, early check-in, fly by security, and 25% earning bonus on points.

One more perk for international travelers, no foreign transaction fees. It’s not clear if they eat the fee that Visa charges but this card won’t charge you.

Finally, it’s a Visa Signature card and while they don’t advertise it, I believe it may have Visa Signature Concierge and all the other Visa Signature benefits.

I don’t yet have an airline branded credit card but if I were to get one, this would be at. At the moment my two-card system of the Citi Forward Card and TrueEarnings Card from Costco and American Express has worked well for me. Thought the $800 in fares is very very appealing.
