Super Bowl Stock Market Indicator
From Investopedia: “An indicator based on the belief that a Super Bowl win for a team from the old AFL (AFC division) foretells a decline in the stock market for the coming year, and that a win for a team from the old NFL (NFC division) means the stock market will be up for the year.”
This appears to be 85% correct over the “past few years.” The AFL only had ten teams in it before the merger in 1966 (Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Oilers, Oakland Raiders, New York Jets, San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins and the Cincinnati Bengals) and none of them are in the Super Bowl being played this weekend between the Pittsburgh Steelers (AFC) and the Seattle Seahawks (NFC).
So what does this mean? Nothing. It’s all hocus pocus. But if you want to read more about this then check out Snopes.com’s analysis.
rh mentioned in the comments that the Steelers were an original NFL team that moved to the AFC after the merger so if they won it would be good for the market (if you believe the indicator of course). So I’ll be I’m still cheering for the Stillers, even if it means a downturn in the stock market.

Steelers are an old NFL team, in fact an original NFL team. Steelers agreed to move to the AFC at the time of the NFL/AFL merger, along with the original Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Colts. “Old NFL”and “old AFL” in the Super Bowl Stock Market Indicator means pre- NFL/AFL merger. Therefore a Steelers win would be bullish. Seahawks are neither old NFL or old AFL, so I assume a Seahawk win would be a neutral market signal.

I just think Seattle is getting ignored, and they are underrated. Bettis is a nice guy, but that story line is getting old

I’m counting on Cowher to keep the Steelers grounded. If that doesn’t happen, they could come in too confident. That said, Seattle’s only had one great playoff game while the Steelers have had three. Should be a great game.
As far as a bet goes, how about trading space on your blogs?
The Steelers are playing for Bettis in his final year, he’s definitely retiring so they want to send their boy out in style. Hines Ward cried after Pittsburgh were knocked out of the playoffs because he, and everyone else, wanted to send Bettis out in style… now they get to do that in his home town.
I’ll put MyMoneyBlog Is My Daddy (or something like that) with a link to your blog in that whitespace in the upper right hand corner if the Seahawks win and leave it up for a month. I also reserve the right to link to an explanation as to why that’s there. What do you think Jonathan?

I just put $110 on the Steelers via some sportsbook called SportsInterAction (ref link)… this is my first bet on a sports game with some online company. I hope I don’t get scammed…

I think the AFL/NFL, AFC/NFC history of these teams was so muddled that it was eventually decided that this particular Super Bowl has no predictive power (unlike all the other which not only predict the future, but also govern the stock market.
