Super Bowl Stock Market Indicator

NFL Hall of Fame Super Bowl BannersFrom Investopedia: “An indicator based on the belief that a Super Bowl win for a team from the old AFL (AFC division) foretells a decline in the stock market for the coming year, and that a win for a team from the old NFL (NFC division) means the stock market will be up for the year.”

This appears to be 85% correct over the “past few years.” The AFL only had ten teams in it before the merger in 1966 (Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Oilers, Oakland Raiders, New York Jets, San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins and the Cincinnati Bengals) and none of them are in the Super Bowl being played this weekend between the Pittsburgh Steelers (AFC) and the Seattle Seahawks (NFC).

So what does this mean? Nothing. It’s all hocus pocus. But if you want to read more about this then check out Snopes.com’s analysis.

rh mentioned in the comments that the Steelers were an original NFL team that moved to the AFC after the merger so if they won it would be good for the market (if you believe the indicator of course). So I’ll be I’m still cheering for the Stillers, even if it means a downturn in the stock market.

Steelers are an old NFL team, in fact an original NFL team. Steelers agreed to move to the AFC at the time of the NFL/AFL merger, along with the original Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Colts. “Old NFL”and “old AFL” in the Super Bowl Stock Market Indicator means pre- NFL/AFL merger. Therefore a Steelers win would be bullish. Seahawks are neither old NFL or old AFL, so I assume a Seahawk win would be a neutral market signal.

I didn’t think of it that way but you are in fact correct! Double good then!

Go Steelers — no matter what it means!!!!!

I think a bet regarding the Seahawks and Steelers is in order… :) Now what would be a fair wager? Go ‘hawks!

Hrm… I don’t even know what I could offer up besides cold hard cash. I could do some drought dance or something. Jon - you actually in Seattle?

Your boy Alexander is gonna get himself concussed (again) and become a high priced cheerleader (again).

I just think Seattle is getting ignored, and they are underrated. Bettis is a nice guy, but that story line is getting old ;) Gotta spice things up anyways. Cash is good - I was also thinking something like putting “Jim is my Daddy” somewhere on my blog if I lose or something =)

I’m counting on Cowher to keep the Steelers grounded. If that doesn’t happen, they could come in too confident. That said, Seattle’s only had one great playoff game while the Steelers have had three. Should be a great game.

As far as a bet goes, how about trading space on your blogs? ;-)

The Steelers are playing for Bettis in his final year, he’s definitely retiring so they want to send their boy out in style. Hines Ward cried after Pittsburgh were knocked out of the playoffs because he, and everyone else, wanted to send Bettis out in style… now they get to do that in his home town.

I’ll put MyMoneyBlog Is My Daddy (or something like that) with a link to your blog in that whitespace in the upper right hand corner if the Seahawks win and leave it up for a month. I also reserve the right to link to an explanation as to why that’s there. What do you think Jonathan?

Wow… jim’s throwing down the gauntlet on this one.

I think the loser should have to run the winner’s AdSense ID on their site for a month… Now THAT would make it interesting.

Ohhhh, yeah!!!! NOW we’re talkin’!!!

That’s some serious dough …

So… Are you and Jonathan up for it???

Ok how about either a single “Bargaineering is My Daddy” or “MyMoneyBlog is My Daddy” blog post. We can explain in the rest of the post. It has to stay up for at least a week (not sure how you have your front page set).

I’m in if you’re in.

No more dough, I’ve already got enough money riding on this game! ;)

Sure, I’ll have to figure out how I’m going to do it…

Change it to “Blueprint is My Daddy” instead and you’re on. :)

Cool. We can change the length if you want, but in Wordpress, if you go to Options > Reading > Show at most: XX posts or XX days, you can set it that way.

So it won’t need to be at the top, just visible on the homepage? I can do that I think but I don’t think I’ll need to… haha

LOL :) Like the Seahawks, I’ll go easy on the trash talk and leave it all on the field. Yeah, just a regular blog post, keep it simple.

I just put $110 on the Steelers via some sportsbook called SportsInterAction (ref link)… this is my first bet on a sports game with some online company. I hope I don’t get scammed…

If Jim loses, I’m going to comment the heck out of his post to force it to the top of his most talked about posts…

Hey, Jim Kelly says it’s the best online sports book, so I’m sure you’re safe. Jim Kelly wouldn’t lie to you, would he?

I believed him… :)

And I might exclude this post from the list :)

Not THIS post. I’m talking about the one where you admit that MyMoneyBlog is your Daddy.

Nickel — I’ll help you out. :-)

Ok, that S-U-C-K-E-D. :P

I’ve held up my end of the bargain. Now I gotta pay of my bookie before he breaks my legs…

:)

Not only did I win the big bet I put on the Steelers covering but I won all four prop bets I made, but, none of those bets are sweeter than seeing this post. :)

[...] Jim from Blueprint for Financial Prosperity submits Super Bowl Stock Market Indicator. Jim says, “If the Steelers win this week, the stock market will be up on the week… we’re 85% sure of it if past performance is an indicator of future performance (which it isn’t). And the Steelers will win.” [...]

Congrats, Jim. I thought it was all over when Big Ben threw that interception. My heart about stopped!!!

Just went to MMB. Is that it? One headline? No “The Steelers are great”, “I was a dunce”, or anything like that?

Yeah, I woud’ve expected at least a link to your site in the body of the post, and perhaps a bit of explanation…

Jim — I’d ask for a full-blown “The Steelers are the Greatest” post from him ;-)

BTW — No that the Steelers have won, what’s going to happen to the stock market (the original question)?

I think the AFL/NFL, AFC/NFC history of these teams was so muddled that it was eventually decided that this particular Super Bowl has no predictive power (unlike all the other which not only predict the future, but also govern the stock market.

Nickel — you’re starting to sound like Flexo. ;-)
