Cheap, easy ways to get your game on this Halloween

Cheap, easy DIY video game Halloween costumesIf you’ve seen any pictures of cosplay enthusiasts taken at any of the various massive comic conventions that happen every year all over the world, you could be excused for thinking dressing up as a video game character is an elaborate, time-consuming, expensive affair.

While that may be true in many cases, there are a ton of video game Halloween costumes that only require inexpensive clothing and objects you may already have lying around the house. Dressing up as these three characters in particular won’t run you more than about $40 and will take you almost no time to put together.

Cheap, easy DIY Halloween costumes based on reality TV

Low-cost reality-show Halloween costumesDisclaimer: I love Halloween. LOVE it. Choosing a Halloween costume is one of the highlights of my year. What could be more fun than dressing like a fool and going out in public? You guessed it: getting your friends together and dressing like a group of fools! In recent years, when Halloween approaches, my friends and I have designated a group theme for everyone to follow (e.g., superheroes or “The Wizard of Oz”).

Your Take: Homemade Halloween Costumes Are Awesome, or Cheap?

There’s been a bit of a row over Target’s advertisement slamming homemade costumes (video after the jump) and it’s no wonder – homemade halloween costumes are awesome. In fact, the homemade Iron Man costume in the advertisement is pretty good relative to some of the things I’ve been able make. Check out the sweet cardboard helmet, light-up chest and flashlight hands… I mean it looks pretty darn good. A lot better than a cheesy plastic thing made in China for $2 (and sold for $25) that doesn’t even light up.

More importantly, why make fun of parents who are trying to do the right thing? Making a costume is a lot more fun and resourceful than buying a piece of junk plastic costume. The fun is in the whole experience, not just running around collecting candy. Also, the costume is unique. A million other kids will be running around with that unimaginative costume, only one kid will be wearing that costume.

What do you think? Are homemade costumes da bomb or just cheap?

How to Save on Halloween Candy

Burning Jack O' LanternAs the sugar-fueled, much anticipated mischievous holiday of Halloween draws near, frugal families are trying to figure out how they can save money on Halloween candy. Unfortunately for the money conscious, this year’s Halloween falls on the worst possible day, a Saturday. A Saturday Halloween means trick or treaters will be out earlier and longer than if it were on a workday and that means there will be more ghosts, pumpkins, and football player zombies wandering up to your door asking for candy.

However, if you’re smart about how you approach Halloween, you can save yourself some a little bit of money and every little bit counts.
