Valentine’s Day Cheapskate Contest

It’s almost that time. With all that pink and red displayed in every store and jewelry commercials on heavy rotation on every channel, anyone with a significant other can feel their wallets cringing in fear at the approach of Valentine’s Day. So what is it this year? Chocolates? Flowers? A teddy bear with a heart?

This time of year many of us struggle to set some time and money aside to buy a meaningful gift for our significant other — and sometimes, we just don’t. Tell us about a cheapskate moment that you have had for Valentine’s Day that actually worked out for you — a cheap gift your significant other actually liked and thought was meaningful.

The person who submits the best cheapskate Valentine’s Day gift story will win a $150 gift card to Edible Arrangements.

Make sure to include #vdaycheapskate with a social media post, and tweet at or tag @bargainr.

Our panel of judges will decide who had the best cheapskate story.

Here are the official rules.

My favorite cheapskate idea is to wait till after the holiday. All holiday candy and decorations are marked way down. Marked down candy always tastes sweeter.

We have a tradition were we resend the same cards back and forth every year!! Makes card selection a real no brainer!!!!

Making dinner together at home with food purchased using coupons and sales, and candy (not necessarily heart shaped) bought in January during after Christmas sale.

I can’t claim this, but my brother and sister in law go to a store together to a card aisle, hand each other the card they would have bought, and when they are done reading, leave the store (without the cards). I get such a laugh out of that!

Until now I prefer to make a Valentine’s card for my loved ones. I love making cards for them with TLC! ;)

Our tradition started by accident. Some time ago I had forgotten to get DW a Valentine Day’s card and the day was upon me. I dug around and found the Valentine’s Day card from the previous year (1995). In the spirit of “full disclosure” I signed the card again and put “96″. To be clear I am married to a saint and she got a big kick out of the “second hand card”. So this will be the 19th year DW will recieve this “special card”…..with a new signature and year…

This year my plan is to surprise my wife at work with a drop in karaoke to the Bruno Mars song – Just the Way You Are. I need to mention that I can’t sing to save my life and all her coworkers are going to be there so I will be making a bit of a fool of myself but she’s worth it. I found a youtube video I can play on my phone linked to my bluetooth speaker. Then I want to take her to our favorite Thai place for their cheap lunch buffet. Tonight I will cook a simple crock pot meal for the family and we can all sing karaoke and laugh together. Can’t wait to see her reaction. Total cost is around $20 and will last from lunch time until bed time.
