Visual Multiplication Video

Need to do some quick multiplication and only have pen and paper? You could multiply the old school way using numbers (gasp!) or you can just draw some lines.
You’re still multiplying, just with lines instead of numbers. One gotcha is to remember the “invisible” lines for zeroes and it gets a little messy when the numbers get larger.

That is really intense. I wonder what my accounting teachers would have done back in college, if I was doing problems that way. Think they would approve?
Neat trick. I’m not really clear on the exact rules they use just watching the video. Seems much easier with lower digits. With higher digits you have to draw a LOT of lines. e.g. I’d like to seed them do 78 x 869.
Is it weird I find this absolutely fascinating? Kudos Jim!

interesting, but it’d take up a good amount of work paper
