America’s Biggest, Most Expensive Homes

The Neptune PoolWe often think that the very rich live differently from the rest of us. And when you look at some of their homes, it seems obvious that they are a world apart. The homes of the super wealthy aren’t just homes; they’re practically works of art in some cases.

Right now, the world’s most expensive home is valued at $1 billion and located in India. It’s also 27 stories high, and has 400,000 square feet, and is called Antilla. It’s even possible to live in the world’s most expensive apartment building at One Hyde Park in London, with apartments costing about $11,000 per square feet.

But America has it’s own share of expensive homes, even though there aren’t any that are at the $1 billion mark. Some of the most expensive homes in the United States include:

  • Fairfield Pond: This New York home is sometimes considered the most expensive/valuable home in the United States, at $198 million. It features a $150,000 hot tub, as well as a basketball court and a bowling alley. Everything you need is right there, in a beautiful setting.
  • The Hearst Mansion: This mansion, located in Los Angeles, was, at one time, worth $165 million. JFK brought Jackie to the mansion for their honeymoon, and The Godfather used it for the famous horse head scene. However, even though the home was considered so valuable prior to the financial crisis, it was, at one time, marked down to $95 million when it went on the market in 2010 when its owner filed for bankruptcy.
  • The Pinnacle: If you like skiing, The Pinnacle, located in Montana, might be the place of you. This ski lodge includes a chairlift right to the ski resort, so it gives new meaning to “ski-in/ski-out.” This home is thought to be worth right around $155 million.
  • The Manor: Valued at $150 million, The Manor features an ice skating rink, as well as a bowling alley. And there are rumors that there is an entire wing devoted to the clothing of the owner’s wife.
  • Mansion in Silicon Valley: A Russian billionaire paid $100 billion for a mansion in Silicon Valley. There’s an indoor pool as well as an outdoor pool. It’s huge, but only has five bedrooms. Those must be big bedrooms.

These homes are quite different from the tiny houses that some on the other end of the spectrum live in. Instead of choosing ostentatious homes, there are those who decide to live in more modest homes — even though they might be able to afford something more expensive.

Of course, most of us are middle class. Many of us can’t even conceive of living in such huge mansions. It’s important, though, to carefully consider any home before you buy. After all, some of those who buy these expensive homes find out, later, that they can’t actually afford them, like the owner of The Hearst Mansion, who filed for bankruptcy and had to try to sell for $70 million less than he paid for it. It’s clear that you need to be careful about what you buy, no matter how much money you have right now.

  1. I believe that “100 billion” for the mansion in silicon valley should be “100 million”.

Re: mansion in silicon valley, that should be 100 million according to the article linked. Although I’d like to see what a 100 billion dollar home would look like.

Gives the rest of us something to aspire to.

The home you referred to as “The Hearst Mansion,” while built by William Randolph Hearst, is actually called Beverly House, and is located in Beverly Hills. This is not to be confused with Hearst Castle, located 250 miles north of Los Angeles, and home to the Neptune Pool you’ve pictured.

Good clarification, because as I was reading the article, I thought “Isn’t Hearst Castle a state park or something?”

  5. The photo looks like it’s from Hearst Castle in Northern CA. It is a great place to visit. We are heading up there again this fall!

This is UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!! I can’t believe people spend such huge amounts of money on a home!

You can get just so much house for the money.I believe real estate people are making a killing off of the buyer.Personally,I would find it hard to sleep at night knowing I had too much house and there are millons of homeless people worldwide!

  8. There are a number of truly incredible homes in the Hampton’s, but the Fairfield Pond estate looks like something straight out of a fantasy! I don’t know how much I would like living in one of these places, but staying there on vacation, or having a wedding ceremony/reception at one of these incredible houses would be like a dream come true!
