Paraphrase: 'Of course you'll have a social infrastructure of family and friends' . Huh?? These are ASSETS THAT NOT EVERYONE HAS. Certainly if they do they can not ASSUME these people will care for them financially.

I hope I misunderstood this, but if I didn’t, you’d have to follow this advice extremely carefully. Honestly, I can’t even imagine inviting a current employer to “bid on me” while I’m already employed. Although this could get you more money, it’s a wonderful way to burn bridges.

If you do think you’re being underpaid, I think it’s a better idea to discuss this directly with your employer using terms other than “making offers.”\-------------------------------------------------------

Contrary to popular belief, compensation is not about productivity, it's about how little you can get away with paying. Where I work 20 employees earn minimum wage; our employer makes $3 million.

If a hamburger flipper is a business, the rate of return is so pathetic he should go out of business.

How many of you would flip hamburgers?

Yes we should look at ourselves as a business. Invest in your business and get the best price for your products and services. It is a free market. If you cannot make a good living working for someone else then move your business into the freelance or consulting market.

I have thought this way for years. Glad to see someone else thinks this way.

Well, since we are just a business, then we must have a complete financial plan that will "mind our own business" and bring us to a better future.

I really like the "minimize your expenses" part. Many people I know will pick based on salary alone with no regard of how long you need to work and how far you need to drive. With gas at $3+ maybe going to $4 dollars over here in California, gas is a major expense!
