I am sadly finding out that I am a guinea pig person. I have guinea pig and love her sweetness and easy maintanance. We’ve also got an 8 month old lab puppy and while I love him, he is really becoming a nuisance in the house. I have a 21 month old son and another son on the way. Brody, the dog, is too rough with my son. We have to keep him gated in the laundry room and he chews up the wall molding. We’re trying to train him but with my husband’s work schedule and my pregnancy and taking care of my son, I just can’t seem to find the time or patience to properly train and care for a dog. I feel I would do better with Brody if he were an outdoor dog but everyone is so against that. I feel like I’ve made a mistake getting a dog and because he is a living creature, I don’t know what to do. I can’t just “get rid of him” but I’m not giving him the attention he needs, either. What have I done?

My fiances dogs are annoying! Dogs period are annoying! They crave your attention all the time, they’re too needy, they stink, are sloppy, gross, they snore and pass gas like people, eat garbarge, drink out of the toilet, throw up the garbage that they eat, they want to be up under you all the time, cry when you’re not paying attention to them,hard headed, hyper, noisy with all that damn barking. They are just a pain in the @#! I don’t particularly like dogs that much.

I am not a big animal person period. I don’t like it when dogs/cats are inside and they shed their hair on the carpet, on the floor and everywhere. I also don’t like it when they scratch on the floor..

I would like owning a cat/dog but only if it stays outside. That’s where it would be happiest

I’ve loved both cats and dogs. Currently am most fond of dogs. Dogs are far less destructive and way cleaner — they do their business outside, and once they’re past the eat-the-furniture stage, they inflict a lot less damage on the interior decoration than a cat is capable of doing.

And…umh…truth to tell, you can clean the catbox every day of your life and it still will stink. Cats mark their territory with an odor that even obtuse creatures like humans can smell. Dogs lay down a stink, too, but not quite so exuberantly.

Cats are otherwise elegant, though. My recently adopted dog wants a cat. She tries to befriend every cat we encounter on the twice-daily doggy walks. She adores cats (and I don’t mean as lunch meat). Weird.

Great discussion! I’m also a BOTH person, although I’ve only owned dogs, but spent a lot of time with cats. It kind of gets on my nerves when people make big comparisons between the two because, depending on the individual animal, cats and dogs can provide and do many of the same things (and cause many similar annoyances!) You can play and roughhouse with both, cuddle with both, have “conversations” with both, and both could serve as “guard” animals too! And yes it is a pain to walk the dog multiple times a day and scoop the poop, but I’ve also hated smelling and scooping litter when I cared for kitties, and I hate the inability to prevent them from climbing to any surface in my home they choose. One difference I believe each animal has and I love in each is that dogs can be so goofy, unassuming, and they just love you unconditionally and forgive you for just about anything. Cats can have such an attitude though, and be so independent, aloof, and “royal” (I can’t think of a better word for this…?) I love them both and they all deserve our love and homes, especially the ones in shelters!!!

We have 3 dogs and 4 cats. I feel very fortunate to have this much love under one roof.

I’m such a dog person. I have a cat only because in college I wanted a pet and my mom said I wasn’t ready for a dog yet, so she let me have the family cat (they didn’t like each other much). I got bored with him really fast — he’s really independent, not affectionate very often, and he throws up a lot! I had grown up with dogs all my life and really missed that companionship, so I started fostering dogs as a test run to see if I was ready for it. I decided I was, and adopted my fifth foster dog. I have had her almost 2 years now and I just love her to pieces. Yes, she is expensive, and can be a big pain in the butt sometimes (I have to base much of my schedule around her and have to find plans for her when leaving town) but she is an incredible companion. I live alone and she makes me feel more safe and less lonely. She is small and snuggly but loves going on long walks and is very sociable. She makes my cat look worthless

I used to be a dog person but a few years ago a stray cat kept hanging around our house and we eventually ended up taking her in. She completely changed my opinion of cats. She had her own unique personality and loved nothing more than jumping up onto the sofa and playing games with us despite her age.

Unfortunately she developed a tumour and had to be put down last year but she left a lasting impression and is still sorely missed in our house.

I’ve never been a cat person, mainly because I’m allergic to cats. Of course cats seem to somehow realize I’m allergic, and as soon as I show up make a b-line straight for me.. I slept over at a friends house one time and woke up to find the cat sleeping…. on my face. Needless to say i had quite an allergic day that day.

We have a dog- a little 9 lb shih-tzu that thinks she’s a cat. She likes to crawl around on the back of the sofa like a cat, and peer out the windows. So we have the best of both worlds… a dog that thinks its a cat.

Got to go with dog on this one. Have a boxer named Klaya after Cassius Clay. Just added an “a” and changed the C to K and wa-la. She lays on me every night when she sleeps and competes for space in the bed with me and my wife.

I can live without pets but I would choose dogs since you get more interaction (though cats are a lot more self-sufficient!)

I’m an animal person. I love both dogs and cats. The only problem with dogs is that they require more attention and need to be walked every morning. This is a good and a bad thing depending on what situation you are in. Right now I have a cat, but I do want a dog in the future.

I like dogs because of all of the above but don’t have the inclination for all the maintenance (walking and cleaning behind the dog from walking, etc.). You can’t really leave a dog alone for a weekend while you go away (or even longer).

My wife has always had cats but I’m “just OK” with the one we have left (the first one died from old age and a detached retina). The remaining one got a broken leg and nearly broke the bank with vet surgery and recovery and so on. Thank God, I had some money in the bank.

Pets, generally, aren’t as expensive as human kids but almost.

Dogs rule, cats drool! No just kidding they’re both groovy but I prefer my dogs. I like that my dogs are excited to see me when I’ve been gone.
