Your Take: What Are You Saving For?

Ceramic Piggy BankLast week everyone got fired up discussing the health care bill, which is good because open discussion is the soul of a democracy, but this week we’re going to go in a different direction. This week I want to know what you’re saving goals are for this year, a year after one of the worst recessions we’ve seen in a long time, and how you hope to accomplish it. It’s going to be hard to meet those goals, certainly harder than in the economically prosperous years, but the key to meeting your goals is to set them in the first place.

To help you along, SmartyPig has offered to give away four $50 SmartyPig gift cards to four lucky Bargaineering.com commenters. The gift cards can only be used to start a SmartyPig goal or fund an existing one. Winners will be sent a physical gift card in the mail, which they can redeem at anytime. So while you don’t need to have an account to win, you might need one to redeem the gift card.

If you want to learn more about their service, check out my SmartyPig review.

Contest ends at noon next Friday, April 9th, void where prohibited. Good luck!

  2. Beata says:

I’m saving to travel the world after I graduate college. I want to visit the countries that no one sees, and spend time with the people there, getting to know them and helping where I can. I’ve already built schools in Paraguay, so now onto the rest of the world.

  3. Esther says:

I stumbled across smartypig in 2008, after I landed my first job right out of college, while searching for a smart way to save. Now, nearly two years later, I am funding my own way through graduate school and still managing to save a small sum each month for the future. I hope to be able to find a job abroad after graduation.

  4. Joe says:

My wife and I have started to have money automaticly withdrawn and put into a savings account at the end of each week, and on payday, and extra amount is transferred over to our savings account, that way we never the urge to go ahead and spend it and it starts to earn interest for us. We hope to use the money saved to help off set the use of credit cards during the holiday season.

  5. Robert Vancamp says:

Smarty pig is a great way to save. Best interest rates out there. I’ve been saving for a down payment on a new care 70% towards my goal and is easy to maintain. I recommend Smarty Pig to everyone for saving and goal setting. Take control of your money.

We’re saving to move to NC to be closer to family. We went to college in CA and when my company offered to move us to MA and pay the costs we jumped at the chance to get closer to home. After having a child we realized how important it is to be near family and we want our son to grow up with his grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins (4 of them his age!).

We call our goal 0/10. We want to have 0 debt and have $10k in the bank to make our move and we estimate it’ll take 3 years. We started a debt snow ball where the bulk of our money is going and a SmartyPig account. We also cut out cable, canceled our cell phone plan and just use prepaid phones and have just one car (bought used!).

We are trying to save up 3-6 months salary in an emergency fund. The economy is so uncertain. I stay home full time so my husband’s job is our only source of income. It would be devasting if he lost his job!

  8. Melissa says:

Saving for lots of things: house, closing costs, preschool for the twins, car, emergency fund, vacation and our 10 year wedding anniversary in two years!

BTW…been a Smartypig customer for a year now and that’s the PRIMARY reason that I am so organized in saving–love SP!! It forces me to evaluate what is important to me so that I can save for it! (Simple concept…but I missed it for too long!_

I’m saving for a down payment on my first house!

I’m saving to start an renewable energy sourcing company.

I’m saving for a new car to replace my beater. I started with $40 a month increments while I also paid off some credit debt. Now I’m taking $125 out of every check just for my new ride. Hope to bump it up some more UFO can afford it.

  15. Kathleen says:

I’ve wanted to visit Great Britain for years and years, so just a few months ago I started saving on SmartyPig for the airfare costs.

I will roll those SmartyPig savings and interest into a larger goal that then includes lodging costs. Having a series of smaller, short-term, yet related goals keeps me motivated to save, as does SmartyPig’s progress tracking tools.

  16. Elizabeth Stainton says:

I am saving for my wedding, November sixth!

  17. Marie says:

saving for our last trip to Hawaii, not getting any younger , last visit was in1985 and we really cant wait to go back…

Our family is saving for a trip to Hungary to help with sports camps for some orphanages.

  19. James Cook says:

My goal for 2010-2011 is to cut my mortgage principle by 25%. I think I can do it too because I deploy to Iraq in August which means tax free income! The run up in the stock market, concern about bond bubble, and pathetic short term interest rates leaves no other secure investment option than saving 5.875% return on a 30 year fixed mortgage.

  20. Kelsey Frost says:

I am saving to fund my fertility treatments. We are excited about the new health care bill, but unfortunately it still doesn’t cover fertility. SmartyPig makes me feel great about saving and paying off things with CASH!!!

  21. Elena says:

I’m saving for a trip to Chile in December. My best friend lives there and we’re really excited to explore South America.

  22. Tanya says:

I have a lot of my own dogs, but I also foster dogs for a Basset Hound rescue group. So I’m saving up for a new fence for my dogs, but also to ensure a good fenced area for any and all foster dogs that come to stay with me. All dogs need exercise and it needs to be safe first of all, and if it’s safe then I can make their exercise time fun! I have other things I need to save for too, but the fence is the first priority for me. Thanks!

  23. Michael says:

I was saving up toward my goal with Smarty Pig until I lost my job. I was saving just to save, maybe for investing. I was so close.

  24. jen says:

I love Smarty Pig. It helped me save for my Mac, now I’m working on an Italian vacation fund!

  25. Rebecca says:

I’ve got three accounts– one for a down payment on a house. One for a cushion to have before having children. And last a short term account to go back to Mexico to continue volunteer work at an orphanage which I volunteered at a few months ago.
